This has nothing to do with my ES or all that recently happened, but I feel the need to share this anyway to hopefully prevent a tragedy to anyone. This weekend my husband and I decided to spend mothers day at our cabin in the woods. It is an off grid cabin, and we use a HOnda super quiet generator to run the electricity. We always keep the generator in the same spot, under the back deck, with it vented towards the creek. Every weekend we take it back home with us. Well this time my husband decided he did not want to lug it home, so he moved UP to the back deck, about three feet from the door. I am sure you can see where this is going. Before we decided to pack up and come back home, he got the bright idea to try and stain the floors, which is a job we did need to do, but not necessarily right at that moment. So he started staining. About twenty minutes later the carbon monoxide detectors (praise God he had foresight to install them) started going off, which alerted us to the danger. Now here is the crazy part.....I grabbed the poodle and ran to open the door for fresh air, but that made it worse because the generator was right there! So I was crying to DH to STOP STAINING THE FLOOR and just go, but that is the most stubborn man. He kept right on staining, with me crying and begging. Kept telling me he had "tons more time" and I was like, those alarms are there for a purpose and we need to GO NOW! Finally I just ran out there (in the pouring rain) and killed the generator myself, and I opened the door wide open and ran with the poodle to the truck. Anyway, alls well that ends well and DH rather sheepishly came on out and we left. But my warning is just to always be careful with generators. And we knew the dangers, but this is the first time we ever put it that close to the door before. And we never will again!!! And make sure if you DO use a generator you always have CO detectors! They saved our lives! I am certain we would have just fallen asleep and then died if we hadn't had them.
