That's awesome! I think what Jesus meant when he said "into your hands I commit my spirit" was that He would be rendered powerless and He put all of His trust in the Father to raise Him from the dead. I used to have the image that Christ went into hell like He was some kind of superhero, kickin butt and setting the captives free! I listened to a teaching early in my christian walk that changed that image, and I had a greater understanding of the love that He had for me. Three days He was in hell paying the penalty I deserved, being tormented and powerless to change His circumstances. He had fully believed the Father concerning His resurrection and the reward He would receive upon His ascension back into heaven and sat down at the Fathers right hand. I also agree with what Joseph Prince said, "Christ did not come to establish the Christian religion but rather the Kingdom of God".

I totally agree that Jesus was in Hell paying our penalty, but it also says in 1 Peter 3:18-19 that Jesus suffered physical death, but He was made alive/raised to life in Spirit, and then He went and preached to the imprisoned spirits, those that disobeyed before the flood of Noah. I believe that was talking about the spirits that were in Hell, meaning Jesus preached to those in Hell.

And in Ephesians 4:8 it says when Jesus ascended on high, He led a crowd of captives and gave gifts to men. So I think He both suffered, and kicked butt setting the captives free. That is just how I interpret these verses though. I believe when the penalty was paid, Satan was defeated. Again, just my take on Scripture.
