SPIRITS OF ERROR
Behind the natural or soulish love hides sometimes a demonic spirit of error. Just as
Satan likes to masquerade as angel of light, so, too, imitate deceiving spirits of error, divine virtues and love, in particular. We must not think, Satan does only things, that are obviously evil. He also can do sometime things, that are seemingly good, if it serves his purpose to get someone under his control. And this is done by the liar and deceiver through imitating divine love, because he knows that this is the main characteristic of a Christian: "By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John 13.35) He therefore knows how to deceive man in a masterly way by imitating this virtue. But because he can't imitate true, spiritual love, he has to cloak it in the mantle of human, natural love.
But both kinds of love are completely different, so that there are even two different words for it in Greek. The love for friends or soulish love - that Satan uses for his purposes - he applies, when he wants to foil the divine plan of the completion of salvation. In all such cases, he makes it appear, as if he had more love than God. With this dangerous seduction he seeks to ensnare man; and only an enlightened, spiritual believer may be able to see through this pretence. As an example may serve the following:
When Jesus foresaw His path of suffering and death on the cross, Satan cloaked himself into the well-intentioned love of Peter by saying: "Never Lord, this shall never happen to you." In this case, Satan seemed to have more love than God. How tempting this soulish love of Satan was, shows the unusual sharp, almost rough retort of the Lord: "Get behind me, Satan". An casual observer might get the impression that Peter with his friendly sympathy had had more love than Jesus with His harsh retort, which some would consider an insult. But the soulish love of Peter was in this case of demonic origin, while the harsh rejection of the Lord sprang from divine, holy love.
A further Christian virtue, Satan likes to hide behind, is humility, which if authentic, is one of the highest, Christian virtues, (Luke 18.13-14, 1.Peter 5.5-6) and a precondition for receiving the grace of God. But many don't know that there is also a false, demonic humility and modesty, which according to Isa. 7.12-13 can be an insult to God and according to Ex. 4.13-14 can invite the wrath of God and is condemned by Paul as well. (Col. 2.18,23)
The satanic humility is so seductive, because he knows to portray it as divine virtue, and most believers are not able to see through this trick and deception. One must keep in mind that Satan always wants the opposite of God. The Lord wants to perfect His Church and grant her the fullness of His grace with all its riches. Satan, however, wants to sabotage this plan by instilling into the Church a false humility and modesty, that reject charismatic gifts and revelations - as no longer needed. He fools the believers into thinking that the expectation of spiritual gifts are an extravagance and arrogance; and we should be content with what we have, because these gift were only destined for the first Church and not for our time and so we can remain humble and not overreach.
This may sound very spiritual and it is no surprise that many accept this view as from God, without testing, if it is scriptural and not realising that Satan is behind this humility. This supposed humility is nothing but distrust, unbelief and contempt for the gifts of God - an insult to God Himself.
