Need Advice Please

I'm currently working full-time in a field that is outside of what I went to school for. There has been a part time job opportunity in my field that has come up, which will allow me to work both my current job and this job at the same time. The only thing is that if I get this new job, it requires 6 weeks of full time training. This will mean that I would need to get time off from my current job in order to go to this training. I don't know how my current job will react to me asking for 6 weeks off and for this reason. I really want to get back into the field that I went to school for, but I also don't want to loose my current job. Looking for some advice please. What would you do if you were in my shoes? I feel so lost and confused. Thank you for helping me.

If I were in your shoes, I would pursue my goal of getting the PT job in my field. I would be honest with my current employer, and stress that I don't plan on leaving them anytime soon. Is there a risk that your current employer could let you go? Sure. But, picture yourself ten or twenty years from now. Will you regret not having pursued the PT job? If the answer could be "yes," then don't let this opportunity pass you by. I'll say a prayer for you.

The only silly question is the unasked question.

Who will it hurt if you ASK your current employer for advice. Don't forget to explain you would be willing to continue with your current job. You would like the opportunity to go into your chosen field. But, mke sure they understand you would like to continue in your current job.

Really, it is hard to advise because we don't know all the details. Like, how much do you like your current job? How important is it to you to go into your chosen field? Will you get compensation during training? These are just a few questions I would ask.

I don't come around these parts much, but stopped in and read your post.
I agree w both posters, and frankly would not thgt about asking your employer for their advice.
That is an excellent approach. But still pls remember it could change your current standings with them as ladybug points out.
So yes, there are other questions. How much do you depend on your current income ? If you are young and single, can you make alternative living arrangements in the case of a pt income?
How in demand is your chosen profession? If there is a lot of demand, getting your foot in the door with real life experience can make all the difference in the world for you.
I've come across too many college kids working cash registers and such, because they couldn't get that 1st job. It's practically everything.
