The Crossroads of Gethsemane Mark 14 vs 32-35
OLDBIKER
This Sunday is known throughout Christianity as "Palm Sunday". This day is remembered as the day that Jesus made His "Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem". The Scriptures in Mark Chpt 11 vs 1-10, Matt. 21 vs1-9 and Luke Chpt. 19 vs-29-38
Each of these writers, have a small difference in their writings but, there is one main theme through it all. It was a glorious time, people removed their cloaks, coats and lay them in His pathway as well as laying palm branches in the same manner. There was much praise and pomp but, Jesus knew that this pathway led to beatings, mockery, suffering and death. He had told his disciples what was going to happen shortly after their arrival into Jerusalem. He had told them that he would be delivered unto evil men, that he would be betrayed and that he would be crucified in Matt. Chpt 20 vs 17-19, Mark 8 vs 31 and Luke 9 vs 22.
Here now, are the 3 Crossroads of Gethsemane:
I. The Crossroads of Prayer:
Jesus had prayed many times in His life. He had taught His disciples how to pray. He had prayed at the tomb of Lazarus. He prayed before He raised the young girl named Tabitha. All these times, He had been praying for others. In our text verses, Jesus is praying for Himself.
Notice vs 35. The text says, And He (Jesus) went forward a little and fell on the ground and prayed that if, it were possible, the hour might pass from Him.
This shows the human side of Jesus. He knew He was facing terrible pain, suffering, and death even though He knew He would raise from the dead in 3 days.
II. The Crossroads of Betrayal:
Jesus knew He would be betrayed by Judas Iscariot. He had told his disciples that He would be betrayed. He also knew how He would be betrayed. He would be betrayed by a token of love. A kiss. Can you imagine what Judas might have thought when he kissed Jesus and Jesus said to him in Luke Chpt 22 vs 48 "but Jesus said unto him Judas betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss"?
We often think of Judas Iscariot as being the one who betrayed Christ and, rightfully so but, did not Peter betray Jesus too when He denied Jesus 3 times and the Cock had to crow to get Peter's attention to this act?
Did not all His disciples betray him when they all fled except John?
Jesus knew all these things would come to pass in just a few short hours. Is it any wonder that the human side of Jesus was overwhelmed with sorrow, grief, despair, rejection and many of the other things we as humans feel yet today when things happen or are about to happen to us, when we face a serious condition, whether it be physical, financial or whatever!!!!!!!
III. The Crossroads of God's Will:
Through all of this, Jesus knew what God's will was. He knew that He came into this world to die as the only acceptable sacrifice for the sin of mankind. Jesus said in John Chpt. 18 vs 37, "To this end, was I born".........
He was stating that His forthcoming crucifixion and death was planned from the beginning as part of God's plan, purpose and provision for mankind.
The greatest prayer that Jesus prayed is John Chpt. 17. This is the real "Lord's Prayer". The one we ofter refer to is the "model prayer" which starts "Our Father, which art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name.............
In John Chpt. 17, this is the greatest intercessory prayer that was ever prayed. In this prayer, Jesus does the following:
a. He defines Eternal Life ( vs 1-3 )
b. He asks for His former Glory, thereby attesting to is Diety in Eternity! (vs 5 )
c. He prays for the church, those that are currently of the faithful.( vs-6-17?
d. He prays for you and for me (believers in the future) vs-20.
Listen folks, we serve a wonderful Savior!!!!!!
He is who the OT Prophets said He would be.
He did what the OT Prophets said He would do.
He accomplished what the OT prophets said He would Accomplish
He is the King of Kings, The Lord of Lords and The Lion from the Tribe of Judah.
He is the Eternal Son, The Mighty Counselor and the Prince of Peace.
He is setting at the right hand of the Father, making intercession for you and for me
He is coming again and This time, there will be no more suffering, no more mockery and, no more Death.
Praise Him for Who is is, what He did for us on Calvary and, for what He will do at His Coming, Again!!!!!!!
Somebody say AMEN and, have a wonderful week.
