"Wherefore, seeing we are also compassed about with so great a cloud of witness, let is lay aside every weight and the sin that doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us. vs-2 Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him, endured the cross , despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne if God."
I believe that each of us have something in our lives that we would rather forget. I won't go into specifics but, in most cases, I believe that to be true.
Monday the 30th, we celebrate Memorial Day, a day set aside to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice that we might have the freedoms and the rights that we have, not only here in America, but throughout the entire world. These men fought and died that tyrants, dictators, and oppression of people could be stopped and these men and women, along with all the other veterans, helped shape history.
In Hebrews , Chapter 11, we see the Bible's "Hall of Fame". It lists many of the heroes of the faith. It also lists their accomplishments and each entry begins with these 2 words "By Faith"!!!!!
1. Abel--offered a more excellent sacrifice--vs-4
2. Enoch--was translated that he might not see death.--vs 5
3. Noah--moved with fear and built an ark--vs-7
4. Abraham--Left his homeland and searched for a city built by God. vs-8-10
5. Sarah--received strength and conceived a child--vs-11
6. Issac--Blessed Jacob and Esau--vs-20
7, Jacob--blessed both sons of Joseph--vs21
8. Joseph--mention the parting of Israel and what to do with his bones, after death-- vs-22
9.Moses--left Egyptian luxury and joined with his people, the Jews--vs-23-28.
10. Joshua-- led the Israelites and the walls fell at Jericho--vs-30
11.Rahab--hid the spies and protected her family--vs-31.
It goes on to mention other Heroes by name, Gideon, Sampson, David, and Samuel. Here is what they accomplieshed:
a. the subdued kingdoms
b. wrought righteousness
c. obtained promises
d. stopped the mouth of lions
e. quenched violence of fire
f. escaped the edge of the sword
g. waxed valiant in fight
h. turned enemies to flight
1. THEIR FAITH PUT FOUNDATIONS UNDER THEIR HOPES:
The Bible states we are surrounded by witnesses. In this scripture text, they have passed the baton of faith to us. Our faith is based on what they have done and how God was with them, through it all.
The Apostle Paul referred to this race in 1 Cor, 9:24. " know ye not that run in a race, run all, but one receiveth the prize so run that ye may obtain!"
The person who lives without expectancy or hope, truth, goodness, etc. is dead already.
II. PURPOSE GIVES CONFIDENCE TO OUR HOPE:
The question has been asked many times, how can we have hope and expect goodness when there is so much corruption and evil in the world today? We can do it because these have done it. Without purpose, faith and truth, you soon wear out and have a desire to quit. Jesus knew what was ahead of Him and yet, He knew the truth, that He would rise again the third day. John 10:18. "No man taketh it from me (His life) but, I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father."
III. UNFULFILLMENT PUTS CHALLENGE IN OUR HOPES:
Notice, the scripture said 'These died not receiving all they strived for vs- 35-40
1. They were tortured vs-35
2, They were mocked--vs 36
3. they were scourged--vs--36
4. They were imprisoned--vs-36
5. They were stoned-- vs-37
6. They were sawed in two--vs-37
7. they were slain with the sword--vs-37
8. They were afflicted--vs--37
9. They were tormented--vs-37
10. They were fugitives--vs-38
The way we give true honor to these great Soldiers of the Faith, is to carry on with the same guts, determination, gratitude, love and faith, that they had.
Now that Christ has come and purchased us, we must continue to keep His commandment to share Salvation with a lost and dying world.
Our National Memorial Day honors those who have gave their lives for this country. Let us not forget these heroes in Scripture, who gave sacrifices and did what they had to do, no matter the cost.
May God Bless Our Nation with a stronger generation of Faith in Christ, a Devotion to His cause and, His Kingdom.
I salute both those who have passed, those who have come home and those who are serving in the armed forces of this nation. God Bless all of you and may God Bless America.
