This Scripture, tells is the story of (Abram) Abraham and Lot. Due to friction between their herdsmen, Abraham told Lot to chose which way he wanted to go and then he would go the opposite way.
Life is full of choices and through this message we will try to show 3 things, in each of our lives that affect us.
I. Our choices, dictates the motives of our hearts:
Point: What always appears to be the best, often times isn't.
Lot chose ambition. vs 10
He chose what he considered best, based on what he saw. He saw that it had much water and was good for his flocks. Water is very important to those who have cattle, livestock, sheep, etc. He saw his choice as the best choice and he wanted what he thought was best for him, based on what he saw. His decision, which came from his heart, showed that he wanted to take advantage of what he saw and what he thought was best for him.
Abram took what was left. He moved opposite of the way and, settled in an area of Hebron. As soon as he settled. He built and altar to the Lord. He honored God with what he had and where he was, even though he did not know the territory or the land, Because of this, God honored Abram and made him a Divine promise. Notice the next point.
II. Our Choices reveals the World from God's point of view: vs-15
God said, for all the land that you see, I will give it to you and to your ancestors.
God told Abram to walk around up, down and across this land and wherever he went, it was his.
Point: By choosing the least, in man's eyes, Abram found the most. By choosing what he thought was
the most, Lot actually got the least.
Every time we live and walk in God's way, we will be blessed. It may not be in the things that the world sees, it may not be in the way that the world considers prosperous, popular or pretty but, it is still the best way.
III. Our choices in life affect those who come after us (our descendants) vs 16-17
God told Abram that his seed (descendants) would be more than the dust of the earth.
Many people today are wrapped up in Geneology of their families. They want to know where they come from, what they did, where they lived, how many descendants each of them had, what their names were, etc.. I personally have a cousin who has traced my father's family back to 1529 in England. Some of the history way back then is not too interesting but, some is. I have found there were founders of great universities in my family, some were with George Washington, many were Ministers and Pastors. My grandfather found in the Civil War under U.S. Grant. All of these things made me realize where I came from and I just caught a glimpse of some of the areas that my family have covered from England to Pennsylvania, to Tennessee and then Virginia then, coming to Illinois before Ill. ever became a state. They settled here in 1817,
I mentioned that to emphasize this,. All through these years of my ancestors, there were those who made the choice to follow God and His leadership. Every generation or two, there arose a Minister or Pastor. My father became an Ordained Minister when he was 64 years old and he preached well into his late 80's. I became a Minister when I was 32 years old. There were 10 children born to my father and all were raised in church. To my knowledge, they were all Christians and I preached my last half-sisters funeral, the day after Thanksgiving. She was almost 90 years old.
Life is full of choices and it is my prayer that we make the choice to follow the Lord and His leadership in life so that we can leave a legacy behind that will have a Godly impact on those that follow us.
Have a Great Weekend and may God richly bless you this coming week.
