7 Reasons For Encouragement Eph. 1 vs-15-21
OLDBIKER
Our Scripture today, for the basis of this message deals with who Jesus is and what He has done for us, what He is doing in us and what He has yet to do with us and, for us, in the future.
Jesus taught His disciples many things while He was with them, in the flesh. They saw Him cleanse the leper, heal the blind, the crippled, the diseased and even raise the dead. They saw Him feed thousands with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. They saw Him cast out devils, walk on water and walk through walls.
He spent the last 3-1/2 years of His life here, giving to others. He was the Master Servant. Today, I wish to simply point out, what other things that He gave, that we may not often consider. These things were at the close of His life.
I. He gave his back, to the whip:
Many people took lashings as punishment in biblical times. 40 lashes were the limit in most cases due to more could be life threatening. Jesus was beaten with a cat of nine tails that was made of leather, bone and metal fragments. It ripped out flesh as it was retrieved each time. It was the most brutal of the devices to be used of someone at that time. Many theologians and preachers, whose messages and writings that I have read, have stated that very possibly, Jesus backbone could have been seen, due to his injuries from this beating. These Executioners, had no mercy on those they were to execute. To them, Jesus was no different than any other criminal they had to execute. These executioners were the best at what they did.
II. He gave his brow to the Crown of thorns:
This crown of thorns, in itself, was a mockery. The Roman crowns were made of Gold with precious jewels. Jesus' crown was made of thorns and they did not place it on his head gently, as the Roman Emperors did theirs. His was jammed down on his head to inflict physical pain. It was place there in mockery because He was entitled "The King of the Jews". as Pilate had written.
III. He gave is hands and feet, to the nails:
When I preach Easter messages from time to time. I pass put large nails before the start of the service. As I preach about the crucifixion, I ask the congregation to bow their heads, take these nails and place the sharp end in the cent of their inside palm. I asked them to push on it until they feel pain. I then ask them to close their eyes, and hold that nail there for 1 minute and while doing so, think of what Christ endured on the Cross. Want to catch a glimpse of that, try this, just for 1 minute.
IV. He gave his His mother to John:
Jesus, knowing that his death was soon coming, gave His earthy mother, to John, his disciple and friend.
He wanted her to be taken care of because He knew, that she did not totally understand what was happening nor why. She was grieving for her son, she had to watch his execution. What pain and agony His mother must have endured during this time. There are many who have lost sons and daughters so, we can in some small way, identify with her feelings.
V. He gave His Spirit to His Heavenly Father:
Jesus, knowing that all had been fulfilled concerning Him, He said "it is finished" and He said, "Father, into thy hands, I commend my spirit. He then bowed His head and gave up the Ghost.
One the Day of Atonement, the High Priest would take the blood of sacrificed lambs, go into the Holy of Holies, behind the veil of the Jewish Temple, and there he would offer the blood as an atoning sacrifice to God for his own sins and the sins of the people. You can read about these duties in Hebrews Chpt. 9.
When this blood offering was completed, the High Priest would come out from behind the veil and he would outstretch his arms before the people and he would cry out "IT IS FINISHED< IT IS FINISHED!!!!! The people would then know the sacrifice for sin had been accepted by God. Praise Jesus for His finished sacrifice!!!!!
VI: He gave His side to the Spear:
John 19 vs31-36 speaks that the soldiers came to break the legs of those on the crosses. They did this to hasten death because, with broken legs, they could not push up to breathe. They broke the 2 thieve's legs but, they did not break Christ's legs. This too, was a fulfillment of prophecy. Instead, a soldier, thrust a spear into His side, Chpt. 19 vs 34
VII. He gave unto us, Eternal Life:
John 3:16 Is God's promise of eternal life, when we trust Christ's atoning blood and sacrifice for our sins.
God had a plan, a purpose, a provision and a promise, when He sent His son, Christ Jesus, to be all that the Scriptures and Prophets said He would be. He fulfilled every prophecy concerning Him, down to the very letter. He did what they said He would do and He has done what they say He would do and He will do yet, what the scriptures says He will do.
Our text scripture today says that He has all authority and majesty. Should we as believers not feel encouraged as what is yet to come, all because of Christ.
Have a great week.
