Children Of Bipolar Parents Community Group
This is a place where those of us who have Parents struggling with Bipolar.I have started this group because my Dad is very sick and I myself have so many questions and need support. So I figured I can't be the only one who is going through this tramatic time.Everyday I wake up hoping to hear the life and soul put back into my Father. It's been three months...
Anyway, this December my Mom had to be hospitalized for her COPD and while at the hospital, she began going into a manic state, posting inappropriate pictures of herself and posting unflattering things about the hospital staff. They released her and it has gone downhill. On Christmas Day she sent really scathing texts to my adult children, berating them for not respecting “her baby girl”. I had vented to her prior to realizing her mental state about some minor transgression but nothing I ever would have addressed to my children. Needless to say, I was mortified. I knew there was no point in talking to her; I just blocked her number. She lives out of state about 6 hours away. I tried reaching out to her via text urging her to call her psychiatrist to get her meds balanced and she ignored me. Then she proceeded with the most outlandish long texts that make very little sense. Her husband thinks this is related to dementia or possibly Alzheimer’s; guess he’s in denial too. I finally called her and spoke to her yesterday and she is speaking in a little girl voice. It is very bizarre. I think it has escalated to full blown psychosis. Her husband is taking her to a nuerologist next week, hopefully he will recognize this for what it is.
Back to your struggle though, I would say to encourage your mom to seek help. In some states I know there are laws in place that allow a family member to have someone admitted to a psyche hospital if threats of harm are being made. And your mothers comment about picking up men in bars is text book manic behavior. Inhibitions go away. I am a naturally shy person and became very extroverted in the midst of my mania, not in a good way either.
I hope this helps you, or that by now you have gotten some answers. Setting boundaries on your end is key to taking care of you so don’t feel guilty if you need to block her number. Let me know how it’s going and God bless.
