Champions Of Christ Church Community Group
This is a church, but online! Most people view a church as the building you go to for worship. NOT TRUE. In the beginning, it was a community that shared things. This is a church. A web-based community who can share with others. Feel free to ask questions. There are no "dumb" questions. How will you know unless you ask. I only ask that you have JOY. (Respect of Jesus,...
This made me curious.
I have always been curious. I remain true to my convictions. But, I give attention to other "myths" and belief systems. I read about them. Research them. I want to be able to talk to others with knowledge.
2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
For me, this scripture says just that. other translations say this:
2 Timothy 2:14-16 (NIV)
14 Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 16 Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.
Looking at the context of this scripture, Paul is writing bout false teachings. But, he encourages us to study God's word, to be able to defend against these false teachers. But, I believe he also encourages us to be knowledgeable of other beliefs so we don't sound stupid.
Personally I think learning about other beliefs makes us more approachable when questioned about our Christian faith - in being approachable and understanding of others faiths we can present our own faith in the hope we too will be understood. So yes I don't think its a bad thing to be taught in schools.
This question makes me remember when I was at school and every week there was a compulsory half hour of religious instruction. One year we had a teacher who honestly told us religion wasn't her thing but she read to us from a book about Massada and it was wonderful! Never forgotten it.
I do indeed think it is important to eagerly research other beliefs and also the way non-believers look at it, which I already knew. I now simply know how to tackle any skeptical question/answer they throw at me. I recently had a disussion with a non-believer:
Him: I believe in science.
Me: Why so?
Him: Because science knows everything and has also disproven the Bible.
Me: That's ignorant of you to say and a non-scientific approach, as it has never disproven it.
Him: Did they ever find Jesus' DNA?
Me: No, did they ever find Caesar's? No. Yet you still believe he existed, right? There's even more evidence for Jesus' existence than there is for Caesar's.
Other guy: Jesus existed, pretty sure.
Him: Well okay then. It's just not logical though. I mean, the story of Jesus is just a very pleasing story. He was the Son of God, that died on the cross so that everyone would be forgiven. People at that time would have loved the fact that all of their sins were instantly forgiven.
Me: That doesn't make any sense. They hung him because they did not particularly approve of his coming. Even his own people rejected him. If Jesus and his apostles hadn't performed miracles, then no one would have really believed it. Even some of his apostles died a terrible death.
I then also told him that the historical and archaeological evidence is highly accurate. The fact that at the time, the only people that believed in one God were the people of Israel. That is just amazing also if you realise that the Old Testament was written quite some time later and is still in line with history. Also the archaeological evidence for the existence of giants is just amazing. Some people actually hold those mumified giants within their houses or they put it at an exposition. It's all accurate.
It's sad that, even though I have always attended to Christian schools, the majority of people did not believe (including the teachers). Throughout secondary school, we were taught out of the Bible by non-believers. At the time, I did not care much because I wasn't really busy with it. Now I do care and I think it is a shame that so many ''Christian'' schools are in fact not even all that Christian.
Here is one definition of science:
The observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of phenomena
Notice, it uses words "observation", "experimental", "investigation", "theorectical". aery "iffy" words. If I observe this than I can theorize that.
Science is made up of "theories". Here are some definitions of theory:
1. A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena.
2. The branch of a science or art consisting of its explanatory statements, accepted principles, and methods of analysis, as opposed to practice: a fine musician who had never studied theory.
3. A set of theorems that constitute a systematic view of a branch of mathematics.
4. Abstract reasoning; speculation: a decision based on experience rather than theory.
5. A belief or principle that guides action or assists comprehension or judgment: staked out the house on the theory that criminals usually return to the scene of the crime.
6. An assumption based on limited information or knowledge; a conjecture.
So......science is what someone hs "observed" to create a "theory". Basically....one mans trying to explain away God, and the miricles He prefiorms daily.
Just some info you can use the next time the converstion comes up.
Again, a reason I think we should be knowledgable about other subjects....like mythology. We no longer believe these things becase someone has proved them wrong.
Might I suggest Lee Stroble here. He looked at Christ, and Christianity, through some of the most knowledgeble, scientific minds of today. He was an atheist. Was looking for the Historical Christ. Looked at it very differently than most would.
Once again, just my opinion.
