My Tom Cat, Zoro had a bad case of worms in May. So we took him to the vet, and she gave us this medicine tht is a liquid you drip on the back of the cat's neck. I was skeptical, because I don't really think that a medicine that gets absorbed through the skin can effectively find its way to the large intestine.
Now the poor boy has lost anothe 2 pounds, and I was watching him go about his business, digging a hole in the garden, and guess what! FULL OF WORMS!
I went to a different vet this evening and got a pill for him and gave him to immediately. The other vet told me that these droplet medicines for worms work more like a prevention than a cure. If the cat already has a case of worms, it's always better to worm them with pills or medicine they ingest.
No more snake-oil drops on the back of his neck for Zoro anymore! : (
Sorry you went through that. Poor kitty. I'm beginning to think that vets are becoming just as incompetent as regular doctors are.
In future you might try garlic oil capsules for worms. Just pop one down his throat and that should take care of whatever ails him. Try and get him to eat some plain yogurt too. The probiotics will help his digestive tract recover and he'll gain back his weight sooner because his body will be able to absorb the nutrients in the food more efficiently.
I think that first vet was incompetent as well. Sure, use prevention to help with the fleas on the outside but the cat has a worm problem on the inside right at that moment. I would always have to buy the pill to treat the worms. This other vet we went to for it says it is caused by the flea eggs that the cats lick off themselves when cleaning. I like ALC67's advice on trying garlic oil capsules and some yogurt for the digestive tract. No wonder my cat would try to bug me when I ate yogurt, she liked it.
