I had cats continuously from 1979 to 2017, because I had my own apartment. Now I'm in a personal care home where I'm not allowed to have a cat and I'm so lonely. I keep thinking about moving out, but wondering if I can handle independent living at my age. I'll turn 65 next month. I truly loved my cats--they were my family. I have no other family. There is something very uplifting about caring for a cat that's missing in my life now. They give unconditional love that I miss so much.
I feel the same about losing my little dog to illness. I’m surprised you think 65 is too old to look after yourself. I’m a similar age and wouldn’t consider giving up my independence until I got sick or infirm. I don’t know your circumstances but if you are well and keep socially connected, even through senior clubs, living on your own with a cat is very realistic. The only love I’ve ever been able to trust is from my pets.
