I am having a hard time trying to find a dry cat food for my outside semi feral kitties. I want to get them off of Purina Cat Chow. I have tried several brands and I even tried a very expensive one but they didn't like it and I realized I could not afford $55.00 for a bag of food. I just opened a bag that we are trying, it's called Solid Gold Indigo Moon and I am mixing it with the grocery store food to do a slow introduction. Not sure if I really like this food either, it has a lot of loose dusty powder on it. I was able to get some samples of Natural Balance and they seemed to like that a little better. They don't just get dry food they also get canned food twice a day with a little dry food.

So I guess my question is what kind of dry food are you feeding your cats? I have a hard time making decisions but don't want to keep constantly changing foods. Thanks

I have to feed a prescription type of dry food along with a prescription type of wet food for my male cat.

I USE MEOW MIX DRY CAT FOOD. THERE ARE SEVERAL DIFFERENT FLAVORS, INCLUDING HAIR BALL CONTROL. THEY WILL NOT EAT THE HAIRBALL CONTROL ONE!! GRRRR. THEY GET CANNED FOOD ONCE A DAY, THEY HAVE TO EAT IT ALL BEFORE THEY GET ANY MORE! FRISKIES PATE' TURKEY AND GIZZARD FLAVOR. THEY ALSO GET OCCASIONAL TREATS WHEN I HAVE BEEN GONE FOR A LONG LENGTH OF TIME I GIVE THEM SOME PARTY MIX TO MAKE THEM HAPPY.

There are several excellent web sites that evaluate pet foods. After much research I chose 2. "Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul " and "Taste of the Wild ". To get any pet food other than Dollar General foods I have to drive 22-25 miles. So I order my cat food from www.chest.com. I order 2 large bags at a time (for 3 cats) and get free shipping. The price is under $2 per bag from what the pet stores or TSC is charging. I figure I would pay that in gas. This way it comes right to the house (which is good for us old ladies - LOL) . Both of these foods are grain free. The first ingredient in your pet food should be meat. NotNot.

Sorry about the sudden ending. My Kindle tends to send without my permission sometimes. I need to train it better. As I started to say - Not corn meal, beet meal, meat byproducts, etc. but real meat. This determines the quality of your pet foods. I compared the 2 brands of cat food to the very high priced ones and the quality is still there but at a lower price. When changing foods do it gradually by starting to add the new food to your old food and then gradually eliminating the old food.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up trying out a PetSmart brand called Authority. I had to find something in my price range that does not have salmon in it. I did try the Taste Of The Wild but my one cat seems to be having a problem with salmon in the food. Her chin and lip is so swollen but is looking better since I changed the food. She is a feral cat so I can't do anything but watch and make sure she starts getting better.

My semi ferals at work get 9-lives. It's not expensive and while it's not fancy food it's got everything an average cat needs. Remember they're used to scavenging in tash cans and so on so fancy expensive food will probably be beyond their tastes. Try getting food at Walmart. They typically have the best prices for pet food.

I have read almost every label in the cat food isle at petsmart and petco. Since cats are obligated carnivores, protein is the most important thing for them. They convert protein for energy. They have a limited ability to digest and use carbohydrates. With this in mind, I looked for the dry food with the highest percentage of protein in it. What I found is Purina Cat Chow Naturals (in green bag). It is over 38% protein. Most others are in the 29-34% range. This brand is fairly cheap (can get an 18 lb bag at Walmart for $17.99) and my cats love it. I was even able to get my one obese cat down to a normal weight on it when the "light" foods had never worked. My cats' coats are nice and silky eating this food and they have maintained proper weight on it. I recommend giving a try.

It's funny you mention that food because that is what they are eating right now. They are even losing weight and look much better. I feed 6 semi feral cats and live on a very tight budget. They all started to look sick when I tried the Authority brand cat food and then I tried another Petsmart brand and they all looked even worse and started to lose fur. I bought a bag of the Purina Cat Chow Naturals because I had a coupon and they all look really good and even have more energy. They were all over weight, looked sickly and I thought I was losing them but today they look healthy with bright eyes and the fur is growing back. I did have to go back to Purina Cat Chow for one of them (the one in the blue bag) but she is looking good also.
