OK, I have a situation, in that my eldest cat has been very ill, and while he's been ill, my youngest male cat has been bullying the other cats and the puppy, moving himself up the hierarchy to take over when he passes on. This morning at 11.05am I made the decision and he passed on....
We now have to address the issue of the bullying cat. He is obviously going to be top cat, although he is the youngest, he is the only male in the house, so will be taking charge...............
How do we deal with the bully though.......the other cats can deal with it - they just stand up to him, bop him back etc......but the puppy (well 11 months old) is absolutely terrified of the cat.........and Lucky knows it..........earlier Alexi (puppy) had gone into the hall, Lucky then sat in the doorway to the dining room stopping her from coming back into us.......at night he will position himself on the stairs, so that she can't go down or up..............he will lie in front of her toys so she can't get to them etc etc etc................Alexi will bark and bark at him, to try and scare him off, and call us for help, but he doesn't bat an eyelid at the barking..........
Any suggestions on bringing him back under control would be appreciated..........................
Get some Rescue Remedy and put it on his paws or ears. That will help calm him down. use some on the puppy too. That'll help him deal with the stress.
Thanks ALC67 - hadn't thought about rescue remedy - have got some of that at home somewhere I think if not will get some and give it a try.......anything for some peace......Alexi is coping with it really well dear of her ..... she just stays clear of him, and barks to us if she needs help !!!
I am having a similar problem with one of my males. I use Feliway and I also use a spray bottle filled with water to squirt at him when he gets too aggressive. I know that they will work it out, but sometimes he just needs to have the mood broken!
Thanks everyone for your tips - things have started to settle down thankfully in the house, and he isn't being such a bully anymore :-)
Alexi the puppy is still afraid of him, and he knows it - but with our help she is beginning to stand up to him a little bit more, and see that if she gets close and bops him, he doesn't always hit back at her (mainly because we are there with her) but hopefully she will get her confidence back up with him. Not sure what had happened to make her so afraid but guess something did while we weren't in the house :-( He doesn't taunt her as much anymore, will occasionally stand in her way so she can't get to us, but not as bad as he was.
Hopefully things will continue to remain calm. The other cats seem to have accepted him as top cat now, he gets all the choice spots to lie in (like Tigger use to), get's first dibs on any food etc etc.
I still miss Tigger and so does the eldest female cat who I got when Tigger was 18 months old and was his sole mate......she was never a very friendly and loving cat to us humans, but now she is, she is all over us wanting attention and fuss, because she isn't getting it from Tigger anymore, bless her.
Take care everyone and I hope things settle for you Colleena as well.
Things usually settle down after a while. A new cat always means a shake up in the order of things. When a new pecking order is established everyone calms down. Usually. I'm glad things are getting better.
I've never heard of Rescue Remedy and will look it up.
