Hi, everyone. I'm new to the group and thought I'd open up by discussing thrush and athlete's foot.
I have had thrush all my life, and I have self-diagnosed myself with the condition after doing some looking around on the internet recently, but have not been able to get a doctor to diagnose me with it yet despite my asking about it in their offices when I had appointments for other things. I have had white stuff on my tongue for as long as I can remember, even as a child. No amount of brushing my tongue with a toothbrush will get rid of it - I've tried. Maybe doctors don't listen to me because I am a man, and instances of candida infection is supposedly lower in men than in women. But reduced rate of infection does not equal no rates of infection!
I also have learned that athlete's foot infections can be caused by candida. Like thrush, I have had athlete's foot for as long as I can remember. If I ever removed my shoes in a public place, I bet people would yell at me to put them back on because the odor is HORRIBLE! No amount of foot washing seems to get rid of it. I change my socks daily, and sometimes more often. I change shoes daily and let my shoes 'rest' at least four days before wearing them again by wearing other shoes instead. I put my athletic shoes in the washing machine and then let them air dry to reduce the odor. I have even tried soaking my feet in a mixture of water and mouthwash - didn't work. I tried the old U.S. Army treatment, which consists of spraying the feet with a can of Right Guard aerosol antiperspirant - works only for a day or so and then the odor and itch returns. I suspect the fungus is hiding under my toenails and even in my bloodstream (according to the internet it can do just that), so external treatments may fail.
I would like to try discussing my condition again with my doctor at my next appointment. Does anyone have any tips on how I can get him to listen to me? Does anyone have recommendations for treatments I could discuss with my doctor? I hear there's a pill for Candida infections, but are the side-effects dangerous?
