I was at my therapy appointment last week and as my thrapist came out to get me from the waiting room another client entered, holding her newborn son. He was adorable but had a serious look on his face. As we walked into her office we were talking about the baby and I mentioned the seriousness of his expression. She said, "yes, sometimes they can still remember." She was referring to his past life and asked me if I believed in past lives. I responded that my sister did (which is true, even though she's catholic) and left it at that. But ... it really got me thinking. Do I believe in reincarnation?
I was raised a methodist and still claim that as my religious affiliation today. As a Christian I was made to believe that there is no such thing as reincarnation.
During one of my first sessions my therapist brought up God and her study of Spiritual Psychology. I asked her if her training was "western" or "eastern" and she responded "western" ... but the more I get to know her I think she's a Hindu and subscribes to an eastern philosophy. Maybe she misunderstood my "eastern/western" question ... who knows, because her faith and practices don't bother me (although understanding her basis of perspective is important). Anyway, her question give me pause because I don't have an answer.
If I were to subscribe and believe in reincarnation, wouldn't my current life be a punishment for something I did in a past life? Did I deserve what happened to me in this life ... the abuse, the fear, the sadness and shame? Am I supposed to learn lessons from all of that to carry into my next life? I'm confused.
My faith in God was very strong as a child and teenager. I lost my faith in college and have been struggling to regain it ever since. Starting therapy with my current therapist has been good because she's helped me reconnect with God ... although my current view of religion is obviously shakey.
She's not pushing her beliefs at all. I just feel like a boat without a rudder so the slightest ripple in the water seems to move me in one direction or the other.
Sorry this is more of a ramble than a discussion ... but I'd be interested in people's thoughts.

But, I have a cat, that I swear is a reincarnation of my former cat that passed away. I see so much of my old cat in my new cat that I even call her by his name sometimes. Her personality and behavior is so much like his.
But, I was reading about reincarnation on Beliefnet, and it said something like you come back again to do better than you did in your previous life. If that's the case, I wonder what my past life was like, seeing that my present life was full of SA.
So, I don't believe in reincarnation...though there are times when I see my loved ones that have passed in other people, and they may be old people, so they couldn't have been reincarnated yet...maybe it's just a sign or something they are giving off through that person.
I think every child is born innocent. Yet, Evil roams the Earth, so you have to be constantly on guard to fend off Evil.
Reincarnation is often an explanation of "evolution" in the sense that each generation seems to be born with the sum total of previous generations of learning. I personally see this as the workings of God in that God is continually creating - it didn't stop with the Genesis account, but I can see where the thought patterns would draw that conclusion.
Personally, I am happy with the notion that there are some things that are not meant for us to understand in this lifetime and that one day all of those burning philosophical questions will either be answered when we are "face to face" with our creator or else they won't matter any more.
