Does anyone know if it is possible to practice DBT on your own or whether it is necessary to see a DBT therapist or go to a group. There are no DBT resources in my area but I have heard very good things about it.

I am currently suffering really badly from intrusive thoughts and anxiety. I am looking for a way to try and help myself. I see a therapist but not for DBT.

Can anyone point me to any good DBT resources or any other techniques that they have used to deal with intrusive and unhealthy thought patterns.

I went to group therapy for a while. Being in that group distrubed me due to some of the people in it and the therapist, but I did get some key ideas and tools out of it. These same tools are also in a couple of good workbooks on DBT that you can get on Amazon. The one I got that has good reviews is called, " The Dialetical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook." There is also a DBT group here at DS that I have participated in.

Perhaps we should all post more about our use of skills here as well when something comes up.

Ive practiced DBT with a therapist. But, she mostly simply explained things and reviewed how I used skills and encouraged me. So I wouldnt take it to be very hard to utilize the skills on your own via workbook.

I just got the DBT workbook and am going to try and make the best use of it I can. There is so little DBT available in the UK that there is no hope of a therapist.

I like catwings suggestion about posting about using skills. I find hearing about how people apply things is a great way to learn what might work for me.

I am participating in an online DBT class- just go to Yahoo Groups and search for "DBT class" and it'll pop up. It's not perfect- I would much prefer real world contact, but that simply isn't possible for me as I live in a small town that just doesn't have the services to offer.

On the internet you can print or look at a copy of Marsha Linnhan book witten for DBT. It's a skills training manual. Most of the skills come from buddism. I was in a DBT group at the University of Chicago Hospital with a doctor that does the study with her.
