Being the only girl in a mess of boys, wearing their hand me downs, playing their games, I fell right into being a TomBoy. My Mom could sew really well on her treadle machine and made me gorgeous costumes for plays at school & church. But bec I never identified with the other girls in my class as they were City Girls ( and snubbed me anyways) so in my mind I never felt comfortable "in my own skin."

My third grade teacher was 'a woman of the world to me' being know as an adventure-traveler, knowledgeable and, at least to me, sophisticated. She taught me so many lasting lessons as a child. In particular a life-long appreciation for learning and the importance of affecting others lives in a posItive manner.She was the one who not only accepted me but encouraged me. None of the other teachers I had until college in my fifties ever inspired me, motivated me, or made me feel my full worth as she did.

The most lasting memory I have of her as a little girl I can picture vividly in my mind as I recall sharing a "dirty joke" with her that only my older brother could have shared with me... And instead of lashing out at me, she sank down to her knees to gently give a little chuckle and warn me about the intelligence of keeping 'that sort of thing' to myself.

"Knock - Knock" I said. "WHO's there?" asked she. "Maddam - " I countered. "Maddam WHO? she responded. "MA -DAM FOOT'S CAUGHT IN THE DOOR - THAT'S WHO !!" (Kept me goin for 59 more years !) LOL

My 9th grade English teacher, oh my he was so handsome, thick black hair that fell in his eyes, the deepest blue eyes. he dressed so cool and very casual for the time. I always was on time for his class, did my homework, read all my assignments. Whenever he would ask a question I would be prepared to answer just so that I could talk with him. I really excelled in that class and it paid off all through school and life because I remembered all that he taught. Heck of a reason to remember,huh? LOL.

I had several teachers in my lifetime that affected my life,,,Most of them during grade school,,,I did have a couple high school teachers that I admired and will always remember,,,that is one thing in life we can all relate to a special teacher,,,their job is so important,,,and can have such a tremendous affect on a child's life,,,

The most important teacher in my life was my English/History teacher in my senior year of high school. He was amazing and he really cared about teaching and his students. Ray Rayburn - an amazing man.

I had the most amazing Music teacher in High School. He was a teacher and a friend as well. He taught me to have confidence in myself, and was sort of a psychologist for me. He brought in recordings of Gershwin, classical music, jazz etc and taught us to appreciate all types of music. Another college history professor taught us everything about the particular years we were studying - literature, music, politics from that time. And yet another college professor encouraged me to write, as he thought I was talented. I think these teachers were even more influential than my own family!

I never will forget my 4th grade teacher. She was the one that figured out I was lip reading from the back of the room because when I have a cold or my allergies flare up I can't heard that well. Had parents take me to the doctor and that is what he figured out. She put me at the front of the class and that was such a big help. I still dolip read if I have too.

I loved my third and fourth grade teacher too. She even had her own son in our class and did not treat him any different than the rest of us. One time she asked me during class to repeat the pronouns and I said it so fast (he, she and it) that the last two words were combined into one. The class all started to roar laughing and she put a stop to it right away. Not sure why kids do this, once I was sitting there with the button of my sweater in my mouth and it popped off and I swallowed it. I ran up to her desk in a panic thinking surely I was going to die. She very calmly said to me, "Now don't worry, it will come out", I never figured out how that could happen for quite some time.........LOL.

The teacher that most affected my life was Ben E. King. He was a high school math teacher. My parents transferred me to a different school district after my sophomore year in high school. The districts had different curriculum that complicated my classes. For some reason my old district split the algebra 2 and geometry classes, teaching the first halves one year and the second halves the next. I took the second half of algebra 2 in summer school, but couldn't fit the second half of geometry until the last semester of my senior year. It was a terrible struggle, having forgotten most of what I had learned in the first half. The school gave numerical grades and the report cards were mailed to the parents. I flunked miserably. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't get it. At the end of the year I found out I'd made a 54 on the final which meant I couldn't graduate with my class. But, No one said anything! Mr. King walked up to me as I stood in line to go into the graduation ceremony. I figured he was going to pull me out of the line. Instead, he told me not to be surprised at my report card because it showed 70s for all the 6 week periods, final test and final grade. He said to act like I deserved it because I did. Since I had asked for so much help during the semester, he thought had he had me for the full year, I would have made the grade.

Mr Sanchez, my middle school (junior high) English and History teacher (It was a small school)

He instead of having us do bo-ring things had us do picture collage books with magazine photos cut out to represent famous poems.

He talked with us instead of to us. He would talk about poems and what he thought about them and what did we think?

He read books to us, and talked about them like he was narrating them.
He took us on class trips.

He taught me how to think, how to learn.

He made a home movie set to Richard Harris singing Macarthur Park. Mr S, as we called him LOVED that song and showed it both years I had him for a teacher.

I would have to say, my fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Stephenson. When I was in school, to me, it seemed the prettier girls always got to sit in the front seats of every row. They were the popular girls, and the girls who really dressed nice. I guess the teachers wanted the beauty up front or something. Anyway, after passing to Mrs. Stephenson's class, things were different. She actually placed me up front. I was in the first seat in the first row. I'm sure Mrs. Stephenson didn't know it at the time, but she did a lot for my ego. I felt so important and special. I felt like someone finally cared about the plainer students. Though that was sometime ago, I still have a special place in my heart for Mrs. Stephenson. What she did, just gave me so much strength and high self-esteem. I've felt special ever since.
