It was a paper bag and I recall either Pb&J, cheese, or bologna sandwich and a cookie. I do not recall any fruit.
Hot lunch was not an option until high school and we could buy by the day or week. We would buy on days there was something good or weather was bad. Other days we walked 6 blocks to downtown and visited the soda shop for a nutritious lunch of cherry coke and candy bar.

I took my lunch for the most part. My mom bought me a dark blue lunch box, complete with thermos in the first grade. Actually, it was one from my dad's store. Lunch was usually a lunch meat sandwich, baloney, or pressed ham, a piece of fruit, apple or banana,(not big on oranges), maybe some chips wrapped in wax paper, and milk. If there was something good at the school, I'd buy my lunch.

Oh boy, my mom was a health food nut so no sharing for me.
Whole wheat bread with fried egg or sardine or egg salad You get th gest stinky gross thongs with apple orange or banana. Treat? Oatmeal whole wheat cookie.

I had a metal lunch box with a picture (like Hop A Long Cassidy or what) on it and a small thermos that fit inside. I was so proud of it. There was no lunch available. The kids that lived in the town where the school was got to go home for lunch. I remember envying the kids in town who would buy the "cow's milk in the waxed paper cartons" We kept our own cows. My mother would Never let me buy that milk!

I usually bought lunch at school. My mom learned to only pay for four days because Friday's we usually had a soup consisting of the weeks leftovers. Yuk! On Friday I would take a PB&J sandwich, cheese and crackers, and fruit....in a brown paper bag.

We had free hot lunch at both grade school and high school. Fridays were my favorite, we usually had cream tuna on biscuits with peas and of course my favorite chocolate milk. The cooks were hired ladies from town, boy they could really make some good food----except I hated the spanish rice ! I could smell it all through the school when they made and that was not a good day. yuk !!

1st through 5th grade I do not remember any more about lunch time. 6th grade I remember helping in the lunch room serving the younger kids their meals as they went through the line and I got my lunch free.

High school I ate in the cafe on days that it was good. Then in 10th grade in grade I would skip lunch and hang out in the girls bathroom and pocket my lunch money. Some times my friends and I would walk home and stop at the drug store and have cherry cokes.

Did not eat lunch in 11th grade and 12th grade.

We also had free hot lunch thru grade school and high school.

FREE Lunch??? We had to pay $1.25 for the week or .30c if we bought by day. We got a lunch card that they punched when you went in line. If you were out sick and had an excuse from home you could get credit for days missed. No excuse - well you lost the money.

I carried my lunch to school first in a paper bag which we had to save and take back home to use the next day. Then I was upgraded to a tim lunch box with a thermos. I know I usually had sandwichs made with home made bread. We got to buy our lunch when they were having we espically liked.

Had no choice - always home lunch til my senior year. That was a new school in a new state. Carried a lunch box with thermos some days when mom sent soup otherwise is was paper bags. the school had milk program. I remember $.15/wk for a daily carton of milk. One of the upper classes sold chips for a nickel and each class had a selection candy bars available for sale. These were all fund raising ploys for the school. Needless to say this was a small catholic parish school in New England in the late 50's and early 60's. Lunch was eaten at your desk under the supervision of one of the nuns. They took turns relieving each other for their lunch period. Lots of PB&J and balogna. Of course there was lots of tuna on Friday.

I think I brought lunch in the earlier grades but we moved right across the street from grammer school and went home every day.
High School: I carried my lunch. Sometimes I bought my lunch but not very often. My sandwich from home was much better
