I remember we had just moved to "the city" from the country. We had to get polio shots for immunizations so we wouldn't have to get braces or end up in iron lung machines... I can remember the horrible posters and how scary they were...

My poor mom who was VERY claustrophobic said that if we would BEHAVE when we got our shots she would take us to THE MOVIE SHOW.

THAT was one of 2 times SHE took to the movie theater. The other time was to see The Bible.

THAT is how seriously SHE wanted us to go for our shots. It was a 3 hot series...GOD Bless her DEAR Heart...

People thought polio came from flies so my town would fog the neighborhoods with DDT. I used to love to run through it. Maybe that partly explains why I'm so crazy. We got our first vaccine in a shot in elementary school in 1957 I think. We got our second vaccine, a different version, about a year or two later, by eating a sugar cube.

I remember my whole family going to a public building and lining up to get SUGAR CUBES. In elementary school, there was one boy in a wheelchair from polio'

I remember those DDT foggers, foxysdad, but no - I didnt RUN THROUGH IT!!! LOL

I remember we had like a little pill type cup we had to drink ,,,it was like water,,I was like second grade. Like 1954 or 55...yes it was in school,,,little country school ,,one room school house,,and we also took those little chocolate pills they gave you ,,,iodine pills,,,they were tasty,,got those like maybe... am thinking...once a week? Something to do with the water I believe back then,,,we didn't know we just ate them...

I remember the sugar cubes. Am I right that they were pink from the vacine? I don't remember the foggers.

My SIL got polio when she was a senior in HS and needs hand crutches to walk with. She also had a return bout of polio when she was in her 60s.

I rember that I need that suger cube before I could start school.In elementary school,there would be a school shot day.Public health nurses would come in and vaccinate everyone that had a signed permission slip.Mom always signed us up for anything whenever it was offered.Polio was almost stamped out then.That was back when they used square needles?Felt like it.

I just remember lining up in school for a polio vaccination. I think they put it in my forearm.

I remember my parents making us rest during the heat of the summer because of concerns of polio and lining up for the pink sugar cubes at the school.
I remember my grandfather lining up with us and when he got his sugar cube he tried to swallow it whole and starting coughing and choking. My fahter slapped him on the back and flew out of his mouth.
It was quite a scene and the children in line all started, including my brother and me, started crying because we were scared to death that it was going to happen to us! Needless to say, the parents of those children including my own were not happy with my grandfather for not following directions and letting the sugar cube dissolve in his mouth!

I had the sugar cubes. It was really a big deal back when it first came out.
