Mattresses and Pillows

Do you remember those striped mattresses and pillows? They may have been army surplus. The mattress seemed to be cotton filled and was on top of a set of springs. The pillows were feather filled and weren't very fluffy. And in the winter wool army blankets were used. I've downloaded a pic showing them on my bed in Mom's new house in 1952.

I remember those pillows, and the mattresses, and no they were not comfortable. I am allergic to wool.

I remember those pillows with the stripe fabric. That is called "ticking". I am so allergic to feather pillows and comforters. We have stopped staying hotels and bought an RV because they always have those on the beds. I usually threw them in the corner and asked for something else. But I got sick of 'remaking' the bed everytime we travel.

My country Grandparent had these. City Grandparents no. Think they we're bad on the back. For whatever reason they are a thing of the past. Good flash back:)

we had those at summer camp. the wool blankets were definitely army surplus. they also had army bunk beds and hospital bunk beds, the hospital ones were higher up, scary when you were little and GREAT when you were older.

the wool blankets i LOVED. i still love wool because i get cold easily. each bunk came with an extra wool blanket if it got cold out which happens a LOT in the hills of the north east in the summer time. its the main reason people summer there. those blankets were a life saver.
