Hurricanes

Hi Everyone: Sitting up in New York State and waiting for Hurrican Irene to strike. I know the media is great at providing information to the public, but watching it constantly is just getting me more and more anxious. Pray to God that we do not have floods and falling trees up here, and NYC stays safe.
How many of you have been in catastrophic storms??

I have been in a tornado but never a flood or hurricane. I pray all stay safe and the hurricane is a fizzle!

Back in '99 a tornado came right down the gas line through the trees right down behind the house we were renting! Then it turned sharply in our back yard ad did damage to some neighbor's houses along the road down from where we lived! It sounded just like a freight train comin through!! (I sat in the canter of the 2nd floor on the stairs with 2 big dogs shiverin up against me!)

Well, just for the record the Tropical storm hit the Catskills in NY very, very hard. Downed trees and powerlines were hanging over all the roads near me. I was very fearful that huge trees would get my house and vehicles, but we were very fortunate. We were however without power for 8 days! Thank God we were prepared with canned foods and my neighbor had a generator and provided water for us. Never want to experience that again. Many others were not that fortunate, houses were swept away and communities entirely flooded. Could only advise people to keep canned goods, dry milk, etc on hand for any emergencies that can come about. Wishing everyone well.

Hurricane Isabel in 2003 was the roughest one with 165 MPH winds and H. Irene damaged our house with only 60 MPH winds but our ground was already saturated and the trees couldn't take anymore, but so many had things so much worse happen. Isabel devastated MD and VA

kaching :How much damage did your house sustain? Isn't that the one you have on the market to sell? Thank God you are not still living there or are you still living there part time till you sell? (Not nosey - just concerned...Well..maybe a little nosey!! LOL)

Yes, I am in the house with the damage now. The tree split and 1/2 fell on the upstairs corner of the house. I guess we were fortunate that it didn't do more than $1750.00 damage. It could have been lots worse. We have $250 deductible. I was planning on going to Florida this week but that will have to be postponed until house is repaired. "Life is what happens when you are making other plans." Might not put it on the market until spring. We'll see.
