Our group is primarily for those born from 1946 to 1964 and earlier. Come here to discuss the good and bad things about your age, retirement, benefit problems, and activities. And, maybe throw in a memory or two. If you're younger, you might learn where our generation is coming from. All are welcome.
One of the funniest stories of my radio days came after I became an newsman. Our studios were located at the transmitter site about 5 miles out of town. I worked the morning shift and my newsroom was behind the DJ studio. The DJ and I would talk with each other after the newscast sometimes and the subject of snakes came up one morning. I made the comment that snakes had been a pain to man ever since Adam. A couple of days later, I had a song dedicated to me,,Boa Constrictor by Johnny Cash. The song was dedicated to me by Henry the Snake. Okay, that was fun. A few days later I got a post card. Hand painted on the back was a note saying, "Dear Mike Harris,(my air name) I just love newscasters. Especially for desert. Signed, Henry the Snake. More fun okay. The next week when I tried to pay for my breakfast at a truck stop, the cashier said it had been paid for by,,,you guessed it,,Henry the Snake! Now, this was getting to me. This person knew more about me than they should. A couple of days later, I answered the phone at the same time the DJ did and heard a female voice ask how I was taking Henry. The DJ said it was driving me crazy and it was. The next week a very pretty woman came through the door of the building and being the nice guy I am, I asked her if I could help her. She said maybe she could help me. She owned Henry the Snake. Henry was a 3 foot Rainbow Boa at her pet shop. Well, the DJ, her, and I talked about it on the air and I was talked into giving it a bath. Henry, the DJ, and I made several public appearances after that.
I cant imagine giving a boa a bath let alone being that close to it. A good story to tell all, thank you for sharing
We lived in a very old house in the Boonies 11 miles South of Punxsutawney (yes ~ Phil) PA. My mom kept her preserves, etc in the cellar. The cellar steps were behind a heavy door just off our kitchen. When my Mom wanted "sumethin" from down THERE she would send ME... BECAUSE the big, brown house snakes would be laying down there cooling themselves on the old tin sheet covering the cistern and when I would fly down the stairs they would wiggle and hiss!! She got her sumethins PRONTO!!
We also had a small shed the house had been built on to that had a stream running under it... Mom would cure all her pickles, jams, wine and apple ciders out there. It is also where the butter churn was located. And GUESS WHO had to take turns with her older brother .... Yes we had creepy crawley VISITORS from time to time... I guess THEY'D BE Sneaky Henry's distant COUSINS!!!
