Handkerchiefs

Do you carry and use handkerchiefs? When I was growing up, it seemed every woman carried at least one and possibly two in her purse. Little girls did too. Little boys seldom did and relied on their sleeves or tissues. Handkerchiefs were not only for wiping and blowing your nose, but also a clothing accessory. They were folded a special way and placed in the outside pocket of a suit or sports coat. But that didn't happen till junior high school. Before that, the pocket was sewed shut. Remember the multi-colored ones used in the pocket? They could be folded so a color would coordinate with the suit, shirt, or tie. I still carry two in my right back pocket to wipe or blow my nose, and nowadays, to wipe the sweat off my face.

I use Kleenex, the individual packets fit in my purse or pockets, throw em' away. I find this easier rather tha attempting to keep up with handkercheifs. But growing up I use to carry beautiful 'chief;s.

I have a drawer full of handkerchiefs and on occasion use them when I run out of tissue. I do carry one in my purse along with tissue and if I run out I will use the handkerchief,,,most of us gals when we were young were given those handkerchiefs to iron,,it's the first thing my mother taught me to iron,,,I really think they are lady like but nothing wrong with kleenex either,,and yes, they are disposable...

I will tell you a hilarious story about a seminar I went to. Now this was about in 1986 and I was working at a bank as a personal banker. This seminar encompassed all the banks and credit unions in the area. The guy speaker was talking to us about "the real or the counterfeit". He stressed the importance of studying the real money so we would know a fake bill when we saw it. He then said that remember "things are not always what they appear to be". He was actually the original guy that the movie "Catch Me If You Can" was made from. He was punished by the FBI and part of the punishment was to do these seminars all over the country talking about how he would rob banks, change routing numbers on checks that he created etc....in other words what they call "float time" was a couple days and by the time the check cleared he would be long gone with the money. (he would use a bank clearing house in Hawaii knowing it would take days to clear there)

Long story short-----he was dressed very well in a tailored suit decorated with a red tie and you guessed it the 'red handkerchief in the pocket look' to match the tie. Well at the end of the seminar he said to all of us, "just remember now, things are not always what they appear to be" and with that he whipped out the handkerchief and it was really a red pair of ladies bikini panties and not a hankerchief !!!! We all laughed our heads off and that is how he ended the seminar-----what a character he was but VERY good looking too.

Some of the local department stores sold "pocket handkerchiefs" when I was a kid. They were handkerchief style material folded in a triangle, the top forming the part that would show with the wide part at the bottom either stitched or stapled to a light piece of white cardboard. There was a variety of colors and it was cheaper than buying different colored handkerchiefs.

Growing up, Mom taught me to iron, started me on Dad's handkerchief's and pillow cases:) Remember Dad carrying one in his back pocket daily. Mom didn't.
