Yes, my mom sewed a lot and had one similar and I used it sometimes when I needed to sharpen my craft scissors.

If my mom wanted to make a dress like one she saw in the store. she would buy the dress, bring it home turn it inside-out, and take aluminum foil, press it against the dress seams & create a pattern. Then she would return the unworn dress!

Can not say that I have ever seen that. But I have a knife sharpener where you slide the knife through. i never sharpened the knives though, my husband always did and tell me to be careful when cutting tomatoes.
