In Michigan "back in the day" you had to be 16 years old so I learned just before I turned 16 and my mother taught me along with my older brother. The next year they passed the law that you had to take driver's training in school and I think that may have been 1955 or so. I don't recall needing a learner's permit but they may have been required. We had a stick shift and I had to go with a police officer around about 6 blocks and then had to parallel park...that was the hardest part.

I think I wa about 13 when I began to drive our pickup on the farm backroads. It was a straight drive and my dad taught me to drive. I had been driving tractors on the farm since I was 11. One of my parents were always with me but it was one way of adding some fun to the work I had to do.

I started driving around 15 and my dad took me a few times to practice. Mostly I learned on my own though. In 1968 they enforced the law in our state that you had to take driver's education to get a license. We were given the option though in 1967 and I did not take it that year.

I was 16 in 1969 and you had to take a written exam to get a "learners" permit. My mom taught me to drive. Funny thing was she made me learn to drive backward before she let me drive forward! She said it was because nobody taught her how to back up! I didn't make my actual driver's license until after I was married and Hubby taught me to do the dreaded parallel parking. We had to take the test with a state trooper and I was so nervous I failed the first time. I made my license on Friday the 13th and twenty years later I had my first accident on a Friday 13th .

My mom taught me drive a car. My dad taught me how to drive a pickup with standard shift. I practiced on the parking area of the local university football stadium. It had divided parking areas and roads that led around and between them. I got my license when I was 14 after taking driver's education.

I was 16 and my boyfriend taught me.

I started sitting in my Dad's lap when I was pretty young, can't even remember. He would work the gas and clutch and I would steer. Then as I got bigger I would shift, it was 3 on the tree, he would still clutch. By the time I was in the 6th or 7th grade I could drive pretty good. Worked in a grocery store from the 5th grade on, used my money to buy my first car my Sophmore year, 1957 Ford. Wish I still had it.

Started driving a tractor at age 12....at 16 when I received a permit I had to learn to drive the old pick up truck on the farm.... stick shift,,,,after my Dad set up barrels in the field to teach me to parallel park I was promoted to the family automatic chevy impala...took my DL test at 16...Was a good way to learn on the farm,,,

I learned a trick about parallel parking early on (maybe you all know it). Pull up next to the car ahead of the vacant spot. Start backing up until the front tires of your car are almost lined up with the back tires of the other car. THEN start turning the wheel while still backing into the open spot. That does take some tweeking to get it right but it calms me down and has given me a starting point instead of guessing.

I was not one of those that had to have my license the day I turned 16.
I think I was about 17+ and my Dad taught me. I could barely get it out of 2 gear, that was too fast for me. Made my Dad very frustrated! Now I have a hard time keeping it under 70!
