Our group is primarily for those born from 1946 to 1964 and earlier. Come here to discuss the good and bad things about your age, retirement, benefit problems, and activities. And, maybe throw in a memory or two. If you're younger, you might learn where our generation is coming from. All are welcome.
Read an article in the local newspaper this morning about the local school district needing waivers from the state on elementary school class size. It seems the maximum size is 22 students and they have 24 in some classes. I remember our class size was 30-32 when I started school in 1952 and I don't remember being any less educated. What was your class size when you were in elementary school?

There were about 8 kids in our grade. But 3 classrooms in the school. First and second together, third, fourth and fifth together and then there was sixth, seventh and eighth together. So three teachers in the school total. It was about the same as now -- 24 (per teacher) in each classroom but not in each grade. It was an old school with hardwood, squeaky floors and a phone on the wall in the foyer that was used by "ringing" a person. Every person with a phone had so many rings to call them. (ex. one long ring and two shorts etc.)

I went to a Catholic school and I don't ever remember less than 35 and more normally 40+ per class. Wow would these new teachers freak!

I don't remember but there were 8 grades in the one room school house.. I started first grade and got straight A's in that school,,, We learned from other grades,, I know there were more than 22...There were no swimming pools, or air conditioners, no lockers, and a wooden paddle was given to go to the outhouse..ewwwww We survived and have probably better memories than these kids do today don't you think? I don't even remember there being a phone. The oil stove burned in the winter and all of us were able to bring jars of soup and put them on the oil burner and it was hot for lunch.. Even baked potatoes in tin foil. We smelled like oil burner when we went home Mother use to say.. One teacher for all 8 grades. Once a week we had a music teacher and she played the piano and we sang. Always a picture of George Washington hanging on the wall in every schoolhouse around. Recess was softball in the spring.. We built forts out of leaves in the fall..one swing set , an old iron pump to get our water in the bucket.(Winter time some kids would get their lips stuck on the pump) We all drank from that bucket with the dipper. I love these old memories,,,they were truly the good old days!!!

We had 30-32 in each class but usually had 3 classes for each grade level. If new students came during the year we may end up with 33 or 34. There were no aides to assist the teachers. Our school had one music teacher and one art teacher. All 3 classes would meet together in the gym for these classes once a week.
