THE PERFECT LAMB OF GOD
We need to go back to the Old Testament to find the answer. First, we need to look at Abraham and Isaac. This is a prophetic picture of Christ presenting Himself as the Lamb of God.
Genesis 22:7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
Genesis 22:8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
My interpretation in verse 8 is that God will provide or present Himself; through Jesus, God the Son, as the perfect sacrifice to pay for our sins.
When Jesus is called the Lamb of God in John 1:29 and John 1:36, it is referring to Jesus as the perfect and ultimate sacrifice for sin.
John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
John 1:36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
In order to understand who Christ was and what He did, we again must begin with the Old Testament, which contains prophecies concerning the coming of Christ as a “guilt offering”.
Isaiah 53:10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
In fact, the whole sacrificial system established by God in the Old Testament set the stage for the coming of Jesus Christ, who is the perfect sacrifice God would provide Himself as atonement for the sins of His people.
Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
It is through Jesus’ death on the cross as God’s perfect sacrifice for sin and Jesus’ resurrection three days later that we can now have eternal life if we believe in Jesus. The fact that God Himself; through Jesus, has provided the only offering that atones for our sin is part of the glorious good news of the gospel.

The grace obtained through the advocacy of Christ can be traced back to His all-sufficient sacrifice on the cross. No one can add anything to this perfectly completed and eternally finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. He has done all that is required to meet our greatest need: salvation from God’s wrath and eternal life with Him. Though Jesus’ substitutionary death on the cross has infinite value, His death was specifically planned to completely satisfy God’s divine justice only on behalf of those who would believe on Him as Lord and Savior. Jesus’ death for our sins is one of the critical doctrines of the Christian faith and is at the very core of God’s redemptive plan. Jesus Christ is our ultimate advocate and perfect sacrifice.
