HIS SPIRIT WITH OUR SPIRIT
Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself (HIMSELF)* beareth witness (TESTIFIES)* with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
First we should note that we can see the word ‘Spirit’ and then the word ‘spirit’. The first has a capital ‘S’ and the other does not. This is essential in understanding this verse. For some reason this verse was confusing to me until my pastor told me the meaning.
The word ‘Spirit’ refers to the Holy Spirit who lives within every believer. The word ‘spirit’ refers to our human spirit. The reason I am using this verse is because it helped me to have assurance of my salvation. I was mentally having doubts about my salvation. Once I understood the meaning of this verse I realized that I was saved. Why? It was because I knew that the Spirit was testifying to my spirit that I was saved.
My pastor further explained that we should not rely on our feelings to assure us of our salvation. This verse in Jeremiah explains that we cannot depend on our hearts to always be truthful. Our hearts our deceitful, wicked, and no one can be sure our hearts are truthful.
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know (BE SURE)* it?
