Feast of the Lord: Tabernacles (Sukkot)

The Feast of Tabernacles was the final and most important holiday of the year. The importance of this festival is indicated by the statement, "This is to be a lasting ordinance." The divine pronouncement, "I am the Lord your God," concludes this section on the holidays of the seventh month. The Feast of Tabernacles begins five days after Yom Kippur on the fifteenth of Tishri (September or October). It is a drastic change from one of the most solemn holidays in our year to one of the most joyous. The word Sukkoth means booths, and refers to the temporary dwellings that Jews are commanded to live in during this holiday, just as the Jews did in the wilderness. The Feast of Tabernacles lasts for seven days and ends on the twenty-first day (3x7) of the Hebrew month of Tishri, which is Israel's seventh month.

In contrast to the gravity of the High Holy Days that just ended, Sukkot brings an atmosphere of joy, reflecting the biblical command to "Be joyful at your feast." (Deuteronomy 16:14) In fact, Sukkot is known as "the time of our happiness."

Thanks for posting about Sukkot. Our family's sukkah is still erect in our back yard; weather has been poor so it has not come a time when we can dismantle it without getting soaked by the heavy rains here.

Indeed it is a fun holiday!

However, unlike the Israelites in the desert who were able to dwell in the booths... my family and I came inside once our meal and prayers were done. Its a tad too cold in Eastern Canada to sleep outside in a temporary dwelling in October ;-)

Sukkot or the Feast of Tabernacles will be celebrated this year 2010 on the 22nd of Sept. which is this coming Wednesday... LMKuhn76 describes very well the modern day adaptation of this commanded Feast which has, as the other fall feasts, future prophetic significance for the believer in Messiah.

There is also a very important detail regarding the Messiah in this Feast which has been overlooked by many, if not most, Chrisitan denominations.

You are correct, regarding His Birth it was at the beginning of the Feast of Tabernacles. There are clues given in scripture, primarily the name Emmanuel... God with us. In Leviticus 23, there is a commandment associated with thee feast where for 7 days the Israelites are commanded to dwell in Booths (Sukkahs). In Genesis, Jacob travels to a place called Succoth, named as such because he built booths for his cattle there. If you have the opportunity, watch the movie The Nativity Story, it provides some good representations of hebrew customs of the time.
