Welcome back to the 1980's. Remember how much fun the decade of the 80's was? Remember the tv shows, the movies, the tunes, the trends, the fads, etc. Remember who shot J.R. on "Dallas"? Has this ever happened to you? You hear a cool 80s song on the radio, but then you see the music video for the same song, and the video makes no sense at all or the concept is just really weird.

Ok the song is great, but the video? Why did those 2 guys in the trenchcoats take that guy in? What did he do that was wrong? And why did he keep having those hallucinations?

the main character in the video has a moment of clarity, wanting to escape from the tyranny of the society he lives in. at that moment government agents arrest him for his thoughts of freedom and individualism. He later jumps off a building to escape from their control and he turns into a bird, representing freedom. in the last scene of the video he is once again walking in the crowds of people where he started and it seems everything has just been a dream. However the lesson of the dream is not lost on him and he turns around, presumedly throwing off the chains of the rat race.
It's bit tenuous but perhaps they are saying that
- taking your own path in life may be "lonely" but it is better than wasting your life
/ having a broken heart."
Its also better to be lonely than to have a broken heart. a broken heart is always worse.
