Hi I just spotted this group, and I think I have it too, I am well used to it by now I am a 58 year old male , it is not crippling for me just a feature I have learned to manage as long as any interactions are short ond focussed, I would rather do my cuttlefish impression and fade into the wallpaper, unless it was with people that share my interests as I don't do smalltalk very well and I get bored quickly.
I can do social things if pressed but I try to avoid such situations, it has come in very useful over the last 8 years or so, I was Paraplegic for most of that time, unable to walk or to stand up due to Guillain–Barré, it could well have impacted mentally if I were unable to manage by myself, so being able to cope alone for many hours during the day definitely kept me sane.....I do talk a lot when I can, just thought I would lurk for a while just to see what goes on here.........
Until about 5 years ago I didn't even know what to call it. Now at least when someone says "What the eff is wrong with you?", I can slap my chest with pride, smile and say "AVP". Avoidant Personality Disorder. And then I'll empty my head of all the wiki contents I've glomed like a college prof for five minutes straight. Their eyes grow glassy and unfocused and I've got them. No further discussion necessary. Big smile. Half wave bye. Begone intruder! But wait, if you'd like to talk about other topics, you know, interesting things, I'm available. Really.
I guess it helps to talk about it.

And that's how it goes.
