Time for a little venting....
Recently I read someone's blog for the up-teenth time about the indecision of whether their significant "other" was their "soulmate". Everytime I hear Thea Alexander's cosmic hip description for Mr. or Mrs. Perfect I nearly want to scream!
Where did the belief orginate that people only have one absolutely perfect soulmate?
And since when did it become popular for Christians to use this term, when there is no mention of it in the black book?
And why do you only get one in the entire universe? Why can't you have dozens of them?
It almost brings me to the concept of the next sexual revolution that will inevitably take place sometime in this century - poly-marriage.
If we can abandon the medieval Catholic concept of confereto (marriage only to one single person which is a Christian norm), the next social sexual revolution might finally take place - something that Robert A. Heinlein wrote about in his novel "Friday" - Group marriage.
Too radical for you? In the past centuries the large family was the basic unit of social security. Then we evolved to nuclear family. Recently we have evolved to the "patchwork family", so it is only a matter of time until monogamy and the Christian dogma attached to it is abandoned, since a group marriage (evolution of the patchwork clan) has better chances of surviving socio-economically than the nuclear childless couple or the single-parent family.

poly marriage? perhaps... but maybe not. I have my own conclusions of the poly scene based on having been in it and have come to negative conclusions (which would be better discussed privately if anyone really wanted to know)
Also, in evolutionary terms, there are reasons why we socialize romantically the way we do. A man would not be happy letting their woman sleep with other guys (as would happen in a poly situation) because that would reduce the chances of him passing on his genes. And in the same way, women would not let their men sleep with other women because they needed a male to be able to take care of them and protect them (no, that's not sexist.. it's just how our early ancestors worked). This is also why we have the 4-7 year itch- because it's long enough for a man to stay with a woman until the child reaches an age where they're not as vulnerable.
