Alternative Help for RA Community Group
This group is intended to help those who either want to take less of the conventional drugs they are taking, or to gain more control over their illness through alternative therapies. This group is mainly focused on alternative medications, alternative supplements and alternative foods that I have found beneficial for RA through both research and trial and error.
I am thinking about trying kefir. I have not had any dairy in a two years. I bought some local organic kefir, and I'm a little nervous about trying to reintroduce it, but i also feel like it could be a good thing for my body. I have been on the AIP diet since July 4, 2015, and that, in combination with sulfasalazine, has eliminated all my RA symptoms and my lab work last month was really good. The rheumatologist says that if it continues to look good in 6 months that I can begin tapering off the sulfasalazine. I will try introducing kefir according to the AIP reintroduction method well-described by Eileen Laird of Phoenix Helix. I believe the biggest food problem for me is nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, eggplants -- all "healthy" foods that I ate a lot of). Prior to starting the AIP diet I experimented with an anti-candida diet for about 8 weeks, and I got progressively worse on that -- it was basically all veggies, so I was eating lots of nightshades with that.
Another thing that was a huge help was finding a doctor here in New Hampshire who spent lots of time helping me figure things out. She is trained in both conventional medicine and functional medicine. Excellent listener. You can find her at True Health NH. Unfortunately my insurance wouldn't cover visits to her. (yes, the system is messed up.)
I agree that our food choices have a huge impact on our health. It can be hard to figure out and hard to do but so worth it to not have the pain! Keep on experimenting and trying until you find what works! You can do it!
