I'm new here and had about heat exhaustion and dehydration. I'm fair skinned so I'm already prone to getting bad sunburns and one of my blood pressure medications(diltiazem) makes me even more sensitive to the sun. I applied sunscreen every where but my face. I usually don't like putting in on my face because it makes my glasses greasy and I worry about it clogging my pores. I was out for several hours today at a cultural festival where there's very little shade. I was out in the sun but then did put my chair under a tree. I did stand and move out in the open for a better view sometimes and also got some food. I reapplied my sunscreen because it's really hot. I did drink some soda, a bottle of water, ate a snow cone, and had some cinnamon ice tea. I was there from 11am until almost 5pm and only had to go to the bathroom once. I got sunburns on my face, the back of my neck, collarbone area, my arms and my legs from slightly above the knee area all the way down to the tops of my ankles. My face and back of my neck being the worst. I was sweating when I came home and took a cool shower. I've been drinking like crazy and have been putting a lot of 98% aloe vera gel on my burns. I stopped sweating even though I'm still really hot. I'm sitting in the fan(no a/c third floor apartment). I have a bad headache, am breathing fast, feel dizzy, weak and nauseous. Is it heat exhaustion, dehydration or both? Is there anything else I can do besides keep drinking fluids and using the aloe vera gel?

It sounds like both to be honest. Drink something with sodium in it (like gatorade or Smart Water) so you can get your electrolytes back in balance. I get sick like that even if I'm not in the direct sun also, but am outside all day. So drink water, and try to cool down. If it gets too bad you will need to go to the ER. But eat something too, maybe salty crackers or toast. Something that will go down easy and give you sodium too. Aloe vera gel is good, they make some with lidocaine in it and that helps with the pain. Hope you feel better soon!

For the future a good brand of face sunscreen is Coola, or Eucerin. Both are non greasy...I break out like crazy if I'm not careful too. I have had this happen several times (once in Vegas while hungover in 100 degree heat) My friends dumped cold water on me and we sat in the shade for a few hours. I also then took some tylenol for the fever feeling. Also, when coming back on an airplane it used to happen. I would avoid water so I wouldn't have to bug the person next to me to get up too much. And I would get sick.

Thank you for your wonderful suggestions redvelvet!!! My boyfriend is going to get me some aloe vera gel with lidocaine or something similar that will help. The back of my neck is the worst for pain! Taking a cool shower today that area felt like my skin was on fire with pins and needles. My throat is sore right now too but that's either allergies or I'm getting sick. I haven't eaten yet but will. The heat is horrendous! I'm sorry you suffered s much that time in Vegas! Love your avatar!

Helllo turnip :) (what I call people with a sunburn) Did you have a hat on? After all the efforts you went to and you still suffered from the sun/heat-sorry. As I posted on the regular forum, water is the best thing to drink and your medical conditons and meds will affect your response to the heat/sun

Any time! I'm glad you got some relief! Oh yea, the sore throat could be the heat exhaustion. Or I also get sore throat from my asthma meds and fans. Feel better soon!

Melting today in 100 degree humidex with no a/c and live on the third floor. Fan doesn't help much. Were going to look for two or three.

Hey maybe now is your chance to get an portable air cleaner-it doesn't blow air too :)

I don't think we'd be able to afford two a/c and a portable air cleaner. Our apartment is 1000 square feet. Air conditioners of the size we need are at least $200-$300 each plus tax. I hope we can find a good deal. We need to figure out the right size too. I'm thinking 8,000a BTU maybe.

Oh I meant one a/c and one air cleaner..but keeping you cool is the most important-since my puffing air your way isn't helping

How's it going?! Do you feel better??? :)

Yes the sunburn on my face is ok now. The back of my neck is peeling and a little sore. I woke up with chest congestion and pain in the center of my chest that feels like someone punched me when I breathe in, I took extra albuterol and it's too early to take more symbicort. I really need that nebulizer!
