There are some wonderful stories of self-improvement and some horror stories of people running into traffic, I guess that's why it's illegal but honestly, drugs like LSD should be very carefully monitored, not outlawed. A lot of them actually do seem to have professional and spiritual application but it seems that rather than carefully studying the effects and having a trained professional administer it.
I remember somewhere LSD was approved for clinical trials with patients who have terminal illnesses, had something to do with helping the patient come to terms with their situation. A friend of mine showed me an article about it a few years ago, not really sure if I could dig it up again though (I'll look around if your interested).
I've tried other synthetic substances and some of them aren't really that bad, again it really depends on the person. One of my favorites is for most people kind of light and gentle but I guess every so often someone would really freak out (and I mean to the point of uncontrollable delirium), which is weird for such a substance. Personally I could actually sleep on the stuff and the few times I did I had some pretty amazing dreams.
A lot of these synthetic and natural substances do actually have medicinal value and were well respected by many ancient societies, the problem today is a lot of people don't use these substances wisely or respectfully and end up really messing themselves up. There are trained professionals who could teach how to safely use these medicines (my mom, of all people, actually did consult one not too long ago). Some drugs are more dangerous than others either in dosage or effect. There's a lot of stupid people who will ignore the dosage warnings and directions (so many in fact that the drug itself is outlawed, I see the same thing happening with energy drinks, though so far all the programs I've see put together by people attempting to ban them apparently don't know how to read, fallow directions or do any kind of fact checking). Something like LSD I've heard really needs the right kind of surroundings and atmosphere but another drug, like shrooms is less sensitive to it and unless you stupidly decide to take it in unfamiliar and unpleasant surroundings you'll probably be fine. It's also important to be mindful of your moods and feelings at the time. Sometimes when you have serious doubts about taking something, you probably shouldn't (admittedly, I learned that one the hard way)... It's also a really INCREDIBLY good idea to research the drug before taking it so you know what your getting yourself into.
I know I know! Before the waves of "YOUR DOING DRUGS!" Start racking up, I'm NOT doing anything more interesting than weed these days and even that rather sparingly. I was drinking pretty frequently not too long ago but I ran out and haven't had much of an urge to get more despite my state of mind lately. Weed helps when I have it.
Sorry for the long post, it's kind of a popular subject with my friends and I.
Bottom line here is, if someone was going to experiment with a drug like LSD, don't be like any of the thousands of mindless idiots out there, do your research, BE CAREFUL, and if possible/necessary consult a professional, like an herbalist, shaman, doctor, or AT LEAST a close friend who is very experienced with the substance. Plus, if you try anything more traditional, it would be kinda cool to do it in a completely traditional way. Imagine how amazing it would be to travel to south america and attend one of those vision quest rituals! Take Ayahauska with a REAL shaman!
