Adult children of narcissistic parents Community Group
A space to explore our thoughts, feelings and experiences that have occurred as result of our childhoods with narcissistic parents (one or both). It is hoped that we can use this space as a further tool by which to take control of our lives from those we have inadvertantly relinquished it to, heal the hurt and be happy.
For me, I was in 6th grade out riding my bike. My shoelace got tangled in the pedal and being that the big was a little too tall for me, I had no choice but to fall. I fractured my arm. My mom yelled at me because she had to go somewhere and I was holding her up. I was biting back tears and my arm, hand, and fingers were already swelling. I told her I needed to go to the hospital because I broke my arm. She refused to take me because she couldn't afford it and she was already running late. She drove with me to what ever it was that she had to do and told me that I had just sprained my wrist. I waited in the car while she went in where ever ( I really don't remember, I was too focused on the pain and not crying). She just acted very put out that I had injured myself as it didn't fit into her day. I refused to cry because I knew it would make her mad. Seeing I was still cradling my arm, she agreed to go to the store to purchase an Ace bandage so I could wrap my arm. And she wonders why I don't communicate with her now days.....

The most extreme events I can recall from my father were always right after a difficult life event.
After my mom passed, when I was 28 years old, he berated me for all sorts of things I did wrong. His brother was a musician and had just released a new album. I was given a copy of his CD at my mother's funeral. My mother's FUNERAL.
Some time later (a week? a month?), my father yelled at me for not listening to the CD. He went on and on about how genius the CD was, how much acclaim it had received, and I didn't even bother to listen to it.
I had listened to it. I hadn't said anything because I didn't like the music.
It was also during one of the most difficult times of my life. I was executor of my mother's will and had a million things to take care of alongside my grief, but my father expected me to listen to his brother's CD, which is beyond absurd.
During that time, he also told me things like, "People were nice to you, but they weren't fooled by you" and told me about people (who he wouldn't name) that agreed with him that my behaviour was "despicable".
Years later, a few days after my first miscarriage, my father said, "Your husband is going to tire of you always being right". I was still bleeding from my miscarriage.
There are countless examples like this. He always chose to amp up his criticism during a life tragedy.
I was about to board a plane to return home. I moved 3000 miles away from home when I was in my 20's and this was one of the two times I returned (for my grandmother's funeral).
I spent every day (except one) of my days there helping him in his garden. He was no longer able to do physical labour because of a heart attack, so I hauled soil and dug for him. He spent much of that time complaining about other people.
We were at a restaurant before my flight. He decided that I was horrible and for whatever reason was still telling me off at the restaurant. He said that I was "impossible to be around", even though I'd spent nearly my whole trip helping him. He said it was unbearable to be around me.
Then, with a raised voice so all the neighbouring tables could hear, he started to talk about Satan and how he knew more than me and I had to listen to him otherwise I wouldn't learn. People around us looked uncomfortable, shifting their eyes away from us, lowering their heads, glancing over quickly at us and then looking away again.
I was humiliated and in disbelief that he was so clueless.
I've been dealing with s3 free depression since 2016. For some reason I just cannot get out of the depression hole. I am not working and I'm fully devoted to recovery. Unfortunately, my mom does not understand depression, anxiety, OCD, etc.
I had been truing to distance myself, but not going completely contact. I'm a single child who is also an adoptee. My mom was a single parent.
By the way, I am 35.
Anywho, it had berth almost a year since I had been to visit my mom abd other family members, so i bit the bullet and went home for both thanksgiving and Christmas.
I randomly cut my hair off as d did not tell anyone. So when i showed up for thanksgiving, you would have thought i snuck abd cut my mother's while she were sleeping. She accused me of giving her a panic attack and making her sick. She felt like i cut my hair to shock her and or to get back at her. Whatever.
Because, i know i can only take 3 or 4 days around her, my trips are short. She complains. Not understanding how much effort it takes me to travel, be social with family. When i return to my dwellings, I'm completely depleted.
I return for christmas, and agreed to stay fire 7 or 8 days. On day 3, we had the worst argument ever, along with her continuous comment of not liking my short hair and telling everyone we cane into contact with I cut my hair abd how she did not like it.
During this argument, she berated me, v asked how long I'd be depressed, accused me of choosing to be depressed, and said that herb friends wanted to talk to me, to help me realize all that she does and goes through and how i do not take care of her. No one is helping me financially by the way. Mother goes on yup tell me I don't praise her enough, that i need a new doctor and that she feels disconnected from me.
Long story short, i had to page my doctor for an emergency. Im on the phone with my doctor, mom opensb the door to my room and asks who I'm on the phone with. I tell her my doctor, and she asks to speak top my doctor!
Mind you, im crying, the klonopin had not kicked in yet, aand I'm just in need of help! And she's asking top speak top the person helping me! Of course my doctor declined at that moment becauae she was worried about me and wabted to help me. My mother came back 2 more times during the course of the 2 hour conversation, still asking top speak top my doctor. Before I hung up, the doctor guided me on what to say to my mother to get her out my hair and to tell her my doc didn't think speaking up her at that time would be a good idea.
Per my docs instructions, I take additional meds to calm down and be able to rest.
The next morning, I'm shaken awake by my mom who is telling me she was up all night and didn't sleep and found another doc to speak with since my doc would not talk to her. She apologizes, and claims to understand depression at that point. Then brings me breakfast in bed. Later, she asks if I told my doc that she reachd out too these other doctors who she conversed with.
It was not only a damaging situation, but very weird, yet eye opening. I have not been the same since. Many things make more sense now, but are very hurtful just thinking about it.
A more recent example is me having a hysterectomy and receiving no sympathy or empathy from my mother about the huge loss i took. She had a hysterectomy at like 50, so when that was becoming my only option, she seemed excited and told me how grand I'd feel afterwards. My GYN refused to remove my ovaries, yet my mother, to this day says she wishes my doc removed my ovaries. I dont have any chilldren, and IVF is not only super expensive, but it's not guaranteed.
At this point, im trying to figure things out and find a path to moving forward. I had gone a year without picking the skin on my feet and the hair on my head. Now, I'm back to doing those things.
I feel like even though that argument was eye opening, I regressed a good 6 steps.
