My parents just separated/divorced
My dad was visiting me last week and we had a wonderful 3 days of camping and fishing. When we got back to town and back into cell service, we could not get ahold of my mom on the house phone or her cell phone. The next day we could not reach her on either phone. My dad called a neighbor to check on the house, and her car was gone and no one came to the door. Then I got ahold of my high school best friend, who knew the details since my mom asked if he would tend to the outdoor cat. He then dropped the bomb on me that my mom had packed up, hired movers, and moved out. She also changed her phone number so we could not reach her. My parents have been married for 46 years and this blindsided both of us.
I called one of my aunts, and she rudely told me that if she did know where my mom was, I was the last person on earth that she would tell! My uncles were both more gracious and told me that she was safe and doing well but they could not reveal more. Obviously my mom's siblings are guarding her from both me and my dad, and my mom has poisoned them against us. My dad lives 8-10 hours away, and my mom is now 12-14 hours away from me, if she is where I think she is. I still don't know exactly where she is. I won't find out until she chooses to tell me.
My dad drove the 8 hours home early the next morning to go see what he had left. My mom took most of the furniture in the house and half the kitchen supplies. She took 90% of the checking account and spent $6000 on her move. The house feels hollow and has an echo to it inside. I still have not heard from my mom.
I know my dad and mom fought and verbally abused each other. I do not believe that there was physical abuse but I have no proof either way. Regardless, my mom believes she is in danger, whether that is true or not. Growing up, I observed my parents' frequent battles and they have threatened to divorce numerous times but never did. They stayed together because of me. I am the only child. My mom leaned on me as an ally against my dad until recent times, when I chose to stay neutral and set boundaries with her. This has made me Enemy #2 in her mind, second only to my dad.
I have been severely fatigued, depressed, and mostly unable to concentrate all week and did not get very much done at work. I am grieving the loss of relationship with my mom and the shock of what she did. I am also talking to my dad every day to make sure he is safe and supported, while trying not to take sides. I am still trying to figure out if I feel responsible for their marriage or their separation. I know I am not responsible, but at the same time I was the reason they chose to stay together when I was 2 years old and forward. I am not sure what other questions I have but my emotions are overwhelming me and making it hard to function with what is before me where I live.
