Hell, I'm a 25 year old female who is a child of divorce. I guess I wanted to post just to see if anyone out there has experienced something similar to me and how I can move forward with it. My parents divorced when I was 13, so about 12 years ago. My mother cheated on my dad. The funny thing is they didn't get divorced right away my dad still wanted to be with my mom even after finding out (she didn't cover her tracks well) about her affair. But what stuck with me all these years is the lack of effort she put into trying to save the marriage. She didn't try to make it work like he did and she had already made up her mind. It made me angry that instead of telling him his efforts were futile she went along with it for almost a year. I have pent up frustration and resentment with my mom even today. Looking back i should have known but as a kid you don't realize that wheb mom leaves you and your sister home alone for hours while dad is at work, you believe her when she says shes "helping a friend with something". She never formally appologized to me and my sister. She thought showering us with gifts would be enought. It wasn't. There were many occassions where she claimed to have broken things off with the guy but she didnt. Eventually my dad stopped trying and the divorce was finalized. My mom ended up leaving. It was hard because my mom ended up moving in with the man, she got engaged with him, and was with him for 5 years after the fact. I'm upset because I was forced to look the guy who in my eyes ruined my family for 5 years. My dad gained full custody of my sister and I. He didn't want an ugly divorce. Every weekend was mom's time with us. I dredded it. Even today i am estranged from my mother, I see her every once in awhile i put on a show i act like i'm happy to see her but theres still some anger there. If anyone has been through something like this I'd like to know so maybe i can get past it
As someone who is 24 and experienced my parents' divorce 10 years ago, I might be able to help a tiny bit. While neither of my parents cheated, there was definitely stuff that wasn't functioning well in their marriage and thus my Dad called it off. The custody battle was ugly, but eventually everything settled down. I lived with my mom for 5 years, then moved in with my dad when I turned 18 to start college.
This morning I calmly confronted him about some stuff that happened during the divorce. It didn't go SUPER well, and I'm upset, but at least I got it off my chest after so many years of wondering and frustration. The best way to get past it is to talk to your mom about it if you can, and to do so in a calm manner. Don't sound overly accusatory because people tend to get highly defensive. Use words like "I feel" instead of "you hurt me and ruined everything."
You may or may not get the answers you need or hear the things you want to hear, but at least you can say you've tried and get it off your chest.
