The concept of Adult Child came from Alateens who began Hope for Adult Child meeting. The original members of our fellowship,who were 18 years old,were adults; but as children grew up alcoholic homes. Adult child also means when confronted, we regress to a stage in our childhood.

Not that it makes a whole lot of difference, but the term "Adult Children of Alcoholics" was coined by Janet Woititz in her book of the same name published in the early 1980's. It quickly became a New York Times best seller and stayed in the top five for over a year. It is still in print.
