I get so tired of hearing people say that you MUST honor abusive parents or family members, because the Bible states it. They need to re-read their Bibles. Here is a link that really helped me to overcome this brainwashing. Please read if you have been struggling with this.

I read a statement not long ago which sums up how I feel about relationships with others, including ones with parents. I feel any relationship regardless of family ties should have the same grounding of respect and mutual fulfilment as any other, not putting up with abuse or anything you're not willing to tolerate is negative and should be removed from your life.

Mmh, today I say;

Yes, Yes honor thy mother and thy father.

And if that means you have to take a step back and figure out who you are and try to understand who they are, then it is honoring them to try your best to pass beyond bitterness and hate.

Maybe one day we will be able to honor them in a more socially visible manner, but for now it must be a case of honoring who they are and their own limits.
