Foster to Adopt

Do you have foster-to-adopt programs where you are, and if so, would you consider that? I know people who have done it, and it worked very well for them. They signed up to be emergency foster parents, and got a child who couldn't be returned to his birth family. One of the drawbacks is that you have to be ready to take a child at any time. But many have become permanent situations. I was just wondering if that was something anyone knew about or would consider.

I have thought about it but for our first child we have decided on adopting a baby as I have never experienced caring for a child since birth and I would like to have the opportunity to do so.
I do however think that fostering to adopt is a great way to build a family. What area are you in? In most states you can go to the government site on fostering and find out how to get started and the steps involved. I wish you luck and can't wait to hear about your journey.

We are adopting out of foster care. The newborn adoption was just too expensive. The program we were looking at was $27K. Our interstate adoption program was $8K. Much more reasonable and we will get more than that back in our taxes since we can take the full tax credit since we are adoptin out of foster care.

That's what I originally wanted to do..... Especially since I was doing in state out of foster which is free. In fact I would get help with support from the state. But after 30 hours of classes I determined it wasn't for me..,, I really want a newborn or child under three max, and I was told in my state that's virtually impossible. Unless it was a situation like u mentioned......emergency foster care that becomes permanent. But I still feel the odds of that are only slightly better then winning the lotto, lol.

We are currently foster parents with the hope of adopting, meaning we hope a child would be available to adopt. We are also simultaneously pursuing an international adoption with a paid agency. We are doing both to "up" our chances.

We attend meetings every 5-6 weeks and there are always people who have adopted from foster care. And a lot are young children! We want a young child so it gives me hope!

Foster care is amazing! As a matter of fact, I think I want to continue to foster after we adopt. It is very rewarding! We got used to giving them back and do okay with it. We've developed survival skills and ways to quickly go back to a pre-child state after they leave. We are self employed so we have flexible schedules. Most of our calls are around 2am because that's usually the magic hour for someone getting into trouble.

It would touch me deeply if we could adopt from both foster care and internationally!
