The softer side of growing up in a dysfunctional home... a sanctuary to feel home with friends and never alone.

An outstanding question this week: "Do I have a God of love or a God of fear?"
I wonder how many people are in the rooms of 12 Step fellowships (and how many more need to be) at least in part because of a toxic religious upbringing.
As a recovering Southern Baptist, I certainly got introduced to the whole "God of fear" concept. There was no shortage of hearing preachers scream that we were all going to "burn in hay-ull" if anyone did the least thing wrong. More than that, though, was that I was introduced to a God of SHAME. The message was simple and clear: if I was suffering in my life, it was because I wasn't good enough. After hearing that message long enough, loud enough, and especially early enough, it soon enough became my identity. Pile on several decades of shame-based bad choices that ensured my continued suffering, and it only served to reinforce that central belief that I wasn't good enough.
It all changed one night as I was in the process of getting organized - "getting my affairs in order" as it were - in preparation of taking my own life. I thought about all the pain I was in, all the ways my life had failed, how I felt like an empty shell of a human being, and I just couldn't take it anymore. In my anguish I cried out, very simply, "Help me, Lord." Moments later I literally saw the following words scroll across the back of my mind:
"Don't be afraid. Get help. You're not going to BELIEVE how good your life is going to be!"
At that moment, I had something in my life that I hadn't had for a long time: hope. I also found the courage to reach out for help, first by seeing my doctor and getting on some meds, then by beginning therapy, and taking one arduous step after the next into this thing we call recovery. Along the way I began to become acquainted with a God of my understanding.
One thing he did as I was early in recovery was to lead me to a healthy church. There I experienced unconditional love, validation, and as my therapist so wisely put it, I was able to "take my rightful seat at the table of humanity." My understanding of - and relationship with - my Higher Power has only been deepened by being in the rooms of 12 Step recovery.
The God of my understanding is one who met me where I was, at my point of need and desperation. I didn't have to be "good enough," I only had to want his help and be willing to accept it. Today I understand a God who is extravagant with love, compassion and mercy. I have a Higher Power who wants me to grow, and (very patiently, I might add) will keep sending a lesson until I finally get a clue. Moreover, the God of my understanding has a sense of humor. (If the human race weren't enough proof, have you ever considered the platypus?)
I listened as several other F2F group members shared a similar path story - who were wounded by toxic religion early on, turned their backs on it and on God, and later came to a loving relationship with the God of their understanding in the rooms.

When i Landed at the Walls of Al-Anon, I had beliefs that i know longer Carry... When i got here "Part" of My Fear was of God, yet a larger part was in fear of Becoming the People within that church... "Holy'r then Now" types that when one would walk away others would gossip & brag or make fun...
I was Listening to a Preacher tell us how be kind to tho neighbor just about everytime i entered the church and every time i left I dis Liked all my neighbors... I was told that if you did Wrong, then Hell was the ONLY place for you! there was No Room in Heaven for People who Sinned & carried out wrong doing... If I Wasn't Saved By God then Hell was where Id be...
"And then I'd Go HOME!"
To a father that cheaped repeatedly on my Mother, beat her if he drank to much to release his anger of himself & his life choices... I mother that sat in denial of all that was happening within her Family, and 3 kids that just wanted to be "Anywhere" but in the middle of their Shortcomings....
So God was Confusing to me! I was Taught to Believe Good is Rewarded, Bad is Punishment for worthless... And i sure felt it most times!
When I landed here and the "Concept" of (A GOD OF MY UNDERSTANDING) was just more then i could understand.. How can that be! And when Someone said one day that they got to al-anon they had No God... Their "GOD" was the Meetings!! I thought they Lost their Mind...lol...
well Now I Share that Same story with New Comers, because I to Did not find my GOD of Understanding till i got here! And I am Proud to say that from the Help of All of You! and the Love & Support of All of My Al-Anon Family, My God will Always be a Loving God... Thanks to the 12 Steps & the HP that Placed Each of YOU Within My Journey, & My Heart...
Thank you So Much (((((((A1))))))) I have come here today and got Messages from each & every share... And Myself & My HP Are Both Grateful for the Gift this Program has to offer, and the Love & Enterchanging it can do for anyone that Truly desires the Will to Live...

Oneness :0)
When I got sober I was told to find an HP... and I wanted nothing to do with that... I was going to stay sober on my terms... screw God!!!
Well this attitude kept me sober for five years but I had no foundation to stay sober and ending up getting drunk again.
This time, I knew there was something about this HP thing and wanted to find mine. What I began to understand that, for the program, my HP didn't need to be yours or anybody else's - just mine.
And I also began to understand that I didn't have to fear this HP... in fact HP would become my best Friend. And yes, the name of my HP is Love.
I have often said that I have found the perfect church, it plays the music I like, the sermons I love, even the time of the service is perfect... there is only one little problem with it... I'm the only member...
Dave
I know that God/HP loves me - warts and all !
My biggest problem with God/HP? I wish I could totally trust and not only trust when I am in so much pain that I have no other place it seems to go! *smiling*
