One of my past "sponsors" almost always picked "humility" as a topic whever he chaired, and then he would talk for most of the meeting so the rest of us could practice a bit.

Seriously I see humility as being having an accurate picture of myself - I have heard it described as being right sized.

sobriety is forcing honesty upon me, so i guess im humble now too

To me humility is doing the right thing, putting God's will and other people's welfare before ourselves, keeping ego and approval-seeking out of the way, admitting when we do not have answers and when we are in the wrong, making amends, asking for help when we need it, helping others when they need it, seeking not to hurt others and treating people with respect.

Gaily, good point. I remember a recent meeting where the discussion linked humility to the anonymity of doing good things secretly. Not taking credit.

Coming to the realisation that this whole thing (life) is running on it's own, that there is no "I" there.

There is no "me" doing any of this.

Once you realise that there is no "I" or "me" but only thoughts, emotions, and sensations and that an extreme intellegence is running everything we say and do, can you realise true humility.

One day my sponsor asked me what humility meant to me. He seemed to be asking out of genuine curiosity, so I gave it my best shot. He shuffled some papers on his desk as I was talking, and after a few minutes he looked up and said, "I'm sorry. I wasn't paying attention. What were you saying?"

When it sank in that he had set me up, I was so pissed off that couldn't remember what I had just said. He leaned back, let my consternation speak for itself and laughed his ass off.

Reminds me of how I now think of Humility. The more truth that I contribute about myself using the inventory steps 4,5,10&11 the more truth my employer contributes about myself in the form of promises.

Kind of like a company matching savings plan. I put in 50% and my employer puts in the other 50%. Humility starts and ends with truth.

Yep, being open minded enough to realise what an arse up I'd made of my life and being humble enough to admit that pretty much anything could do a better job of it than me was when I started to feel a little bit humble, every day my life gets better with me not running it makes me feel a little more humble!

It is hard to be humble......particularly when you're perfect in every way, like me..
