I am struggling with the misinformation on the main board. There has always been the anti AA areas and that is fine, I think this helps me to examine me and try and grow and not just follow the flock.

What I am struggling with is my understanding with terms like powerlessness and control in the area of AA.

When I speak of powerlessness in regards to drinking I am talking about alcohol ie I admitted I was powerless over alcohol, I have never admitted I am powerless over being a good husband, father, friend etc I need to work at these things.

As for control again this is relation to alcohol means once I put the first drink in I can not control how much I drink. This does not mean I can not control how I act in relation to my wife, if I was to hit my wife besides being scared of her does not mean that I can not control this of course I am in control and I chose to be an abusive partner, nothing to do with not having control.

I think to isolate these terms and then not use them in the sense they are used is misinformation and bordering as being self serving when not used in tense.

Just some G8 venting.

Once admitting I'm powerless over alcohol, the one driver in my life that in my illusion gave me power to be thr Director and to try to control life to suit me if only the actors would do as I say. Taking away my the one thing that gave me power. Without it I no longer new how to be the Director and stopped trying to manage well on my own power, my ideas (thinking) emotions (feelings) attitude (my beliefs) changed. For me the powerlessness stretched to other areas of my life once I became my own truth. I thought I was the great boyfriend or Dad, when the truth in Step5 showed me my selfishness. I made the decision in 3 to hand it over to the care of God, hand what over? Not just my alcoholism, my will(thinking) life (behaviour). Therefore I changed to spite me. My thoughts were on a much levelar plane.

One sentence in your post really sings to me as a fellow AAer :-

So, I wonder, do the main board have AA to look at these two words as you suggest? i.e. in relation to alcoholism and the three fold illness as defined in the Big Book?

A thought: maybe this is the kind of post that needs to go on the main board to carry the message of powerlessness and control IN AA.

Its like going into a record shop buying a few records and then promptly selling your record player cause ITS ol fashion or better yet does not fit my agenda!! While expounding highly on the records bought and disssing the quality of the components as not up to my standards . You know the acronym for Slip So long Im perfect or is it Sure looks tempting hmmmmmm

Seriously I find the whole judgmental antics lacks any unconditional empathy and is rooted in a Conditional state!!!! So one can feel less out of control with their own serious baggage And try to fit back in to the social norms of this the 21st century's Conditional state... Good luck on the cyber warm and fuzzy feelings received from a cyber hug or bowl of chicken noodle soup !! Oh Hello Bear hows things over on your Island ...You too G8 Hellooo:))

Alcoholism beat me to the punchline before I even took my first breath!!! Good to know that constitutes Powerlessness for Me!!

Hey Oki......all good here and living a sober life with gratitude as always. Amazing how life has changed for me from admitting I am alcoholic, that my life was(is) unmanageable, I am powerless over alcohol and I can not control my drinking.

Great to see you still posting and hope all is good with you too x

Not sure I follow you completely but the way I see it is being powerless was the first step in bringing me toward my Higher Self. When I peeled off the layers of my ego, I was allowing my Higher Power to come into my life and fix everything that I had broken! All I had to do is look around me and see the improvements in my life. I never could have done it alone and I never could have stopped drinking and drugging alone. My higher Power did for me, what I could not do for myself. I am living proof that the promises of AA do come true!

Guess BIM I see on the main board people there who look at step one and don't read "we admitted we are powerless over alcohol...' they seem to read 'we admitted we are powerless over life...' for me that is not the case I did have power over most things in my life. Ie how I treated the wife, kids, jobs etc. If I treated my wife bad was not because I could not stop doing it. I did not have the obsession to hurt me wife that led to the first hurt then craved to hurt her as much as I could. It did not have that type of powerlessness as I did over alcohol.

But others suggest that by admitting I am powerless over alcohol that I can justify everything wrong I did, which as we know is NOT the case.

When I go to meetings there are some I do not agree with and some grate me the wrong way. All of it helps me to grow into someone I like. The growth comes as a result of not allowing others to permeate or affect my good sense of self. I did not have any good sense of self when I came in. Through the years of struggle and conflict with others I learned through the program which includes for me having a sponsor, meetings, the steps, and service work. I still have that same combination today. The promises do come true "if" we work for them...
