I was 8 years sober last week and i was thinking at the weekend about my sober birthday and how it felt very much different that the ones before it. The relationship between the past (my drinking), my journey so far (in recovery) and now seems to have changed.
One of the things is that before I have always thought of myself as a drunk who is sober. This time I thought of myself as a sober person who used to be drunk. Not in a cocky way or thinking I am cured or anything like that. More that sober now feels like the real me whereas for a time in recovery drunk felt like the real me and sober was as unnatural state.
Does that make sense to anyone?

Yes it makes a lot of sense. There are times I look back and it is very hard to believe the girl that stands here today did the things I did for so many years that were some common then, The common has become the uncommon never dreamed it would ever lift. It does come back in sometimes, especially some of the consequences, physically and financially, but the emotional and how I am on the inside today, is almost like being born again.
