Alcoholism required me to drink, whether I wanted to or not. Insanity dominated my life and was the essence of my disease. It robbed me of the freedom of choice over drinking and, therefore, robbed me of all other choices. When I drank, I was unable to make effective choices in any part of my life, and life became unmanageable.

I ask God or my HP in my case to help me understand and accept the full meaning of the disease of alcoholism.

Nice post gjm. It took me a long time to grasp that idea that no matter how much I didnt want to drink, how determined I was that I wouldnt drink, how terrible I knew the consequences of drinking would be etc I would always end up drinking because alcoholism required it. I was not reliably capable of making the free choice not to drink. In that sense I was insane. And I will never be able to beat alcoholism by my own will and determination for that reason

Once I understood that insanity and fully accepted it as being true for me (heart not head), why the 12 steps were what they were made sense to me.

What a relief and the start of a new freedom.
