Hey guys, I'm new to the whole group ordeal and I need advice on what to talk about. Feel free to talk to me about anything that has to do with Asperger's Syndrome.
I have a question.... how do you do at school as far as friends go?
do you have alot? are they understanding of your autism? my son seems to have some really understanding friends so far but there are some kids that are not so nice to him but he thinks they are just bad people who don't know how to have friends.he doesn't really take it personal all the time. just wondering how you handle it
and one more question
what do you like to read about besides tigers?
I'm still trying to get my son to talk on here but he's nervous and doesn't know what to do yet.
Ronda, if it's okay, I'm going to give you my spin from a mother's perspective.
Jordan has come a long way when it comes to school and peer relationships. Some of it has to do with his own maturity level but the school he attends really helps a lot. After he finished seventh grade I pulled him out of the public school and enrolled him at a local charter school. Since he's been there he has really come into his own. He is participating in dance, drama, choir, and band. He is writing now. In fact, after I miscarried his baby sister back in December he submitted a poem to www.poetry.com that he wrote for her and it is going into a book. Academically, he blows me out of the water. His MEAP scores were 788 (math). 830 (science), and 800 and 810 (language arts/reading) and that is WITHOUT any modification. He's had some issues with some of the students but the majority of what I hear is nothing but positive from students and staff alike, which is so refreshing. If he'd have stayed at the middle school he would have become a statistic and I love him entirely too much to let that happen.
He can tell you the rest of what he likes to read about but I will say he likes "The Chronicles of Narnia" and "Calvin and Hobbes."
School was hell for me. It wasn't until I started college and had the chance to escape the little hoodlums that I actually began to enjoy my life. Its not that I was bullied, although it did happen from time to time. It was just that I felt as though I was twenty years older than everyone else but in a child's body. Every one was wrapped up in the business of running around being a kid pretty much up till the age of 16. My voracious appetite for books on philosophy and spirituality didn't really fit in with anyone else's interests.
12 very lonely years. I am sure life would've worked out so much better if I had been home schooled.
Well, Ronda, I also like to research other exotic big cats such as the liger, tigon, red leopard, white panther, black lion, white lion, etc. Also, I read about elephants. If you want to learn how to start an animal sanctuary, go to www.bigcatrescue.org. They have a list of standards to meet. It's a good site.
That's a good question, catlover02. Well, I can honestly say that because of Asperger's Syndrome, I get angry easily. Where I live, when all the lids are together, it's nothing but chaos. But aside from that, it doesn't really affect me. At school on the other hand, I told my 2nd hour class that I had Asperger's Syndrome, and they all laughed at me. It's like they don't understand me at all. I wish I knew how I could get them to listen to and understand me better.
It's very well worth your while to get tested. If you are in school, then there is no excuse, you can get tested without even paying any money. Seriously.
There are people here that have the diagnosis. Myself included. I wish that I had a formal diagnosis ages ago. My first brush with psychiatrists happened in 1970 when I was still 19. So all my life I was on psychiatric medications, various kinds. In 1979 when I was in my final year earning my degree, I was put on lithium carbonate which is for bipolar. Realize how the world was back then. Only severe childhood cases got the childhood schizophrenia diagnosis (Autism).
My life would have been much better if I had known earlier. But science didn't catch up until the late 1990s, so I have been reading.
Inside my heart, I knew all my life that this was not acquired in late teen years.
i just found out today about my illness all by myself turns out that my intuition or gut feeling was right i am a freak and im all alone i dont want this shit ive suffered through too many illusions as it is somebody just tell me what to do about this fucking mess i dont want to be autistic
