A Life Skills Group Community Group
All are welcome to join our group. We're here to share advice, encouragement, and ideas on how to build better lives for ourselves. We can discuss all aspects of daily living, along with anything else that’s on your mind. Each of us knows a little, and together, we know a lot that can help us each to reach higher and go further in life. There's such a lot...
I am 58 - - - well tomorrow I will be : ) and I have gone from being a strong, fairly independent person, to being a chronically depressed, dependent person.
Due to ongoing conflict in my marriage of 35 years, my H and I decided to separate. Then, I was on my own so I was forced to care for myself, run all of my errands, fix my own food...and on and on. So I learned to be self-reliant again.
Also, with the help of my wonderful, amazing, insightful, caring therapist, I have become a very strong person, in terms of mental and personal strength. (My physical strength is still lacking.)
I pushed my H back into the marriage, dropping the divorce proceeding, and letting me return "home." That was only 3 months ago, so I am questioning, wondering, if I made the right decision as there has been some backsliding on my part. Since I have someone to rely on, I have an excuse not to do things myself.
But on my "good" days I am as productive as possible, and on my "bad" days I simply recognize that I have less energy and will get less done. I have learned not to set goals or standards for myself on a daily basis that are within reaching distance. So I don't set myself up to fail anymore which greatly relieves my guilt.
I guess you could say that I am more realistic now with regard to my daily abilities.
So I would conclude that:
!) Knowing yourself, along with
2) Setting realistic goals,
are two fundamental life skills everyone needs to live a more successful life.
Take care all,
BB
Is the ability to be grateful a life skill? I know I must not leave home without it!!!
I tell my kids that mental health is a matter of having a large grab bag of ways to cope.....talk to your mom (well I was talking to my kids....lol); draw, tear up pictures that you draw, write, humor, paint, run, walk, roller skate, kick tires, pet a dog, talk to your dog, talk to your stuffed dog (hey I have kids), whatever. Have a beer but don't rely on only drinking, get drunk but don't rely only on that, call a friend....but know that friends will disapoint at times,
And just on DS........but sometimes internet crashes.... :(
do u know how hard it is for me at age 27 to be relearning these skills? i was once an outgoing person that got killed when my mom said i wish u were never born, smothered u when u were a baby, whore/slut/hoe, do u want to die, go get raped let some other guy kill u and dump ur body somewhere, etc. that would make anyone's communication skills be severed!
my parents never taught me how to stand on my own two feet. i am unemployed with a degree, nobody taught me the things you do/can do if you are unemployed and still need income while it is still hard to get a job anywhere. what could i be doing? i have no idea the suggestions i have gotten weren't that great. if i had skills of being a handy woman (diy housing projects) i would do that and charge for money.
i am looking for places to go to for free to learn different things and gain skills...
