Each of us knows a little, and together, we know a lot that can help us each to reach higher and go further in life. There's such a lot...
One of the people I run errands for asks me to do 'beer runs' for him, in which I walk to a liquor store and pick up a twelve-pack of beer and bring it back to him. He is morbidly obese and lays in his bed all day long watching sports on television and drinking beer. He keeps the door to his room open, and every person, whether they want to or not, has to stop and talk to him about nothing, which is the price they pay for having him as a neighbor. He smells bad because he rarely bathes, and he has just one set of clothes that he wears daily. His room is a filthy mess, with garbage piled all around his bed. Today I decided that I am no longer going to run errands for this man. He has a drinking problem, and in getting beer for him, I am contributing to him wasting his one and only life, whether he values it or not. Also, when I walk past his door and he shouts at me, I will ignore him and keep on walking, as though I have heard nothing.
Having made this decision made it easier for me to make a second decision today regarding another man, who I also have been running errands for. I recently learned that he is on the Megan's Law website, listed as a child molester. That's exactly the kind of person I want nothing to do with. Personally, I believe that a man who molests a child should never be released from prison to begin with. Child molesters should get either the death penalty or be sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole. So, I will not run errands for this man again either. There is a high probability that this man will try to make trouble for me because I am no longer helping him, but that's a risk I have to take in order to feel good about myself and be true to my beliefs.
I will lose a little income from my decisions, and I'll have to live with that.
